There was no way for Kyle Brodziak to push his way past the first round picks and find an NHL job. Sure, he'd improved a lot since his draft day, but as fall 2007 brought shorter days and cooler nights, Brodziak faced an impossible task--how can a guy taken 214th overall win an NHL job over TWO first round picks?

EXTREME HOME MAKEOVER: DALLAS EDITION

We returned late last night from a jaunty jaunt to Las Vegas. We locked eyes with Joe Jonas, slapped hands with Enrique Iglesias and stood 5 feet away from a grumpy looking Lil Jon. To say that it was the experience of a lifetime is an understatement. 

So we are just getting our head wrapped around the recent renovations that Coach Eakins made to the dressing room Chez Oil. Old news to you perhaps but to a level 156 fanboy still floating in celebrity sighting heaven it's news over here.

The preseason is well underway. Some guys are getting a good look with the big club and the NHL is looking to control the look of some players by enforcing an existing rule from the 60s.

GDB -5: VICTORY HUNTING IN VANCOUVER

Before we get carried away let's remember it is only preseason, but Dallas Eakins will be looking for a better effort from the Oilers tonight in Vancouver compared to last night's display in Winnipeg. The Jets had 12 NHL regulars in their lineup while the Oilers had six; Gagner, Yakupov, Jones, Smid, Petry and Grebeshkov, but Eakins has preached being competitive since day one of camp, and if Richard Bachman doesn't stand on his head in the middle frame the score would have been much worse.

The Oilers will dress a more skilled lineup tonight, and Eakins will be hoping for a more competitive result.

GDB -6: JETTING TO WINNIPEG

The Oilers will have their pregame skate in Edmonton this morning, and then fly to Winnipeg this afternoon to take on the Jets. That would never happen in the regular season, but that's life in the preseason.

For many of the veterans it is another opportunity to sharpen their skills, while those on the bubble hope to impress Dallas Eakins, and for some it is likely their final preseason game.
