History tells us two games does not a season make, so those writing off the Edmonton Oilers after Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks are jumping the gun, even if that's understandable with patience waning after seven years out of the playoffs.

So, no, the fate of the Oilers isn't cast in stone after a 5-4 defeat against the Winnipeg Jets on opening night and the loss to the Canucks. That said, I'm more alarmed at how the Oilers lost in Vancouver rather than that they lost.

Based on the reaction to tonight's game on Twitter, I've arrived at an inescapable conclusion: the season is over. Thanks, Craig MacTavish, for trying to fix the Oilers, but now you need to go back to the drawing board. The good news is that you have just under 12 months to completely overhaul the team before the 2014-15 season starts.

GDB 2.0: LOOKING TO REBOUND

Whether it is fair or not, Devan Dubnyk and Roberto Luongo will be scrutinized heavily this season, and they are the focal point tonight. Dubnyk allowed two questionable goals on opening night, and until he cuts down on allowing "weak" goals fans, media and management will question the validity of him being a reliable starter.

Dubnyk has the skills to be a starting goalie. He's shown that, but he struggles with momentarily lapses in focus. Former NHL goalie Mike Greenlay told me this week, it isn't a lack of ability with Dubnyk, but his mental preparation. He needs to find consistency in staying calm and focused, and Greenlay believes the "soft" goals will disappear.

Looking at the Oilers’ centre depth chart, it always seemed likely that newcomer Boyd Gordon was going to get his share of defensive assignments and then some. Dallas Eakins seemed to confirm that on Tuesday, when he slotted Gordon in the most thankless role on the team: Shawn Horcoff’s old job.
