Twenty-five years after the sale of Wayne Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings in a deal orchestrated by Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington, there are still plenty of hockey fans in this town who speak with a great deal of passion about Aug. 9, 1988. Is it any wonder?

I have watched the reaction to the Oilers’ acquisition of Jason LaBarbera this summer with interest, and I can’t shake the impression that he’s being underrated.

Ryan Smyth has played 1,198 regular season games, 95th most in NHL history. If he plays 50 games this year, he'll be in the top-80. If he plays 54 games, he'll pass Jari Kurri, and if he dresses for 57 games he'll pass Kevin Lowe. Smyth has had an outstanding career, that includes one Stanley Cup final appearance, two Olympics (won Gold in 2002) and he won the World Cup in 2004.
Smyth still has a passion for the game and he talked about what he's looking to accomplish this season.

It’s a rough time to be Corey Potter. The Edmonton Oilers have six other defencemen on one-way contracts, and three other guys on two-way deals who will (Justin Schultz), will likely (Anton Belov) and might (Oscar Klefbom) make the team out of training camp.
But there is good news. While the writing may be on the wall in Edmonton, Potter has virtues that should make him of interest to other NHL teams.
