This is Bogdan Yakimov scoring his first KHL goal earlier this season. Yakimov is playing depth minutes but scoring at a very nice clip, and his contributions for Neftekhimik have him front and center on the list of Oilers prospects progress in 2013-14.

No Cigar: Eight Years Out

When I picked the Edmonton Oilers to make the playoffs last season I was playing a hunch despite plenty of evidence I'd be wrong. I was, of course, as the Oilers made it seven straight years out of the post-season.

Picking the Oilers to miss the playoffs in 2013-14 is no such matter. It is, despite my sense there has been more optimism about Edmonton's chances from pundits around the NHL, not to mention long-suffering fans in the City of Champions, going with the odds instead of against them.

In 2009 fall, Jean-Francois Jacques rode an impressive pre-season (5, 3-1-4 +1) into an opening night spot on the 1line for the Edmonton Oilers. He would get only 4 goals during the regular season, but the TC (and Pat Quinn's endorsement) gave his career a push and he played 100 NHL games 2009-11. How much does pre-season scoring mean?

Steve MacIntyre was hurt tonight (well, he hurt himself) and may be headed to IR along with four other guys. The Oilers played what observers described as a "poor" final pre-season game and will now ready themselves for the regular season debut this coming week.

GDB -1: FINAL IMPRESSIONS

The Oilers wrap up the preseason with a tilt against the Dallas/Texas Stars tonight in Oklahoma City. The Oilers currently have 27 players remaining in camp, 23 of them are healthy while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Sam Gagner, Corey Potter and Denis Grebeshkov will start the season on either the IR or LTIR.

It is the final opportunity to impress head coach Dallas Eakins, and tonight's lineup will be very close to what we see next Tuesday when the Oilers open their 34th NHL season against the Winnipeg Jets.
