This is Johnny Boychuk and what's left of Jaroslav Spacek. Boychuk is heading toward free agency and would certainly be on the Oilers shopping list if available. History tells us that Boychuk is likely to re-sign in Boston or with another contender and that means the Oilers will be looking for help elsewhere.

Ryan Jones wants to know if he should cut his hair. I want to know if the guy wearing jersey No. 28 for the Edmonton Oilers in the month or so leading up to the NHL all-star break was Jones or an imposter (Doug Friedman, perhaps) with a flow wig on.

More Ales Hemsky Trade Rumours

The easy way to stop all the Ales Hemsky trade rumours out there would be for him to sign a contract extension. Pending free agent Tim Gleason, regarded as one of the best available defensemen at the NHL trade deadline, signed a four-year extension with Carolina earlier today, instantly putting a halt to a litany of rumours suggesting various destinations for him.

Until Hemsky signs a similar pact, or is traded, the rumours will continue.

Winning garners attention, and the OKC Barons have done a lot of winning this year. They have the best record in the AHL at 29-11-5 despite having only one player in the top-70 in scoring. Ryan Keller is 28th with 35 points in 43 games, while Philippe Cornet sits 71st with 27 points, including 20 goals.

The Barons have two solid  veteran goalies, David LeNeveu and Yann Danis, and they along with a stellar defensive system have given up the fewest goals in the league, 100, while they are 8th in goals scored. They don't have any glaring weaknesses, nor do they have any bonafide superstars. They have depth and head coach Todd Nelson rolls four lines.

But how does the Barons success impact the Oilers?

In the summertime--July 1, mostly--Steve Tambellini made a series of moves designed to improve the big league team. This All-Star weekend, it is clear those moves have not had the desired effect. Were these poor bets?
