In a year where there’s been a shortage of feel-good stories about the Oilers, it’s been very difficult to find positives in the performance of the players, the coaches or the management group.

At first glance, Chris Minard, who was recalled by the Oilers yesterday, isn’t an exception to that pattern. He’s been hurt for most of the year, and struggled after coming back from injury. He’s coming up to replace the disappointing (and now injured) Patrick O’Sullivan. Not much there to feel good about.

But there is one thing worth mentioning amid the doom and gloom: not only is Minard a pretty good player, but his results in Springfield have been exceptional.

Yesterday, we looked at the difficulties with assuming that a lottery pick is a magic bullet that fixes a team’s problems. Because there’s so much more to building a team than just finding a superstar and then glomming random players around him, a bad general manager can make even the greatest pick almost completely irrelevant.

The problem is that the kind of managers who see their teams fall into a position to make a lottery pick are generally the same kind of managers who have that sort of reverse-Midas touch.

The unending roller coaster of emotion takes another twist tonight, as the Oilers go looking for their third consecutive win against the Ottawa Senators. Every win of late elevates the level of concern amongst fans that the Oilers might finish 29th, lose the lottery and end up drafting 3rd and miss out on Tyler Seguin or Taylor Hall.
