In June of 2003, Shawn Belle became a 1st round pick of the St. Louis Blues, taken 30th overall in one of the deepest drafts in NHL history. Drafted out of Tri-City, Belle seemingly had all the tools to play in the NHL. He was an unreal skater, had size, a decent shot and he was strong. Fast-forward seven years and five months later and Belle finds himself ready to play in only his 12th NHL game, in his hometown, against the defending Stanley Cup champions.

There seems to be more than the usual frustration surrounding the Edmonton Oilers. It probably has a lot to do with the in-season "Groundhog Day" that includes long periods of futility combined with small windows that give us a glimpse of the future.

Transitional players are supposed to provide young, rebuilding teams like the Edmonton Oilers with meaningful minutes on the ice and leadership in the dressing room. They're supposed to be a bridge to the future. Right now, that bridge is burning.

Fresh off a four game losing streak where they allowed 25 goals, the Oilers might get be putting out an SOS to Oklahoma City and recalling a defenceman. Ladislav Smid didn't skate today, and Tom Renney couldn't shed any light on Smid's status, because he hasn't spoken to him yet, but he hinted that the Oilers might be adding a D-man before Wednesday's game v. Chicago.
