Toni Rajala’s departure from the Oilers’ organization yesterday didn’t quite come out of left field, given the rumours circulating beforehand that he was interested in going back to Europe, but all the same it was a significant blow to a prospect system almost entirely lacking good forwards at the minor league level.

It's been a few years since I've had Glen Sather on the show, but yesterday the New York Rangers' GM joined Ryan Rishaug and I yesterday and shared his thoughts an wide range of topics. I always enjoy talking to Sather, because he always gives you a straight answer, and he always finds a way to throw in a good story or two.

The Edmonton Oilers cut ties with a pretty talented hockey player this morning, I'd call it an unforced error. The sun will come up tomorrow, but I would suggest that it's generally a poor idea to throw away 21-year old wingers who score at a point-per-game clip in the AHL--no matter their size.

Toni Rajala wasn't going to get a one-way contract from the Edmonton Oilers any time soon despite coming off a fine season with the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL, so he's headed back to Europe because he can make more money there than he can toiling in the minors here.

I’m starting to wonder if the arrangement used for most of last season, one that saw the Oilers’ top line loaded up with Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle, was the best use of the team’s personnel.
