For most of the summer, Oiler fans have been watching Craig MacTavish "build up the middle." A club with so much talent on the wing, and in clear need of an upgrade at G, D and C, would seem to have an obvious 'To Do' list--and for the most part new GM Craig MacTavish has followed the script.
However, the center position remains about the same; with Boyd Gordon replacing Shawn Horcoff, the Edmonton Oilers remain a team without true NHL quality and depth at the position. If the Nuge can't play right away, the club will have to move Taylor Hall over from the wing, weakening an impressive left flank.
We've talked and talked about free agent solutions, but that arena of summer appears to be closed for the Oilers. How then will Craig MacTavish improve center ice? Perhaps we can learn something from his recent past.

All this Gretzky trade talk the last week stirred up the old story machine in my head. Looking at some of the other players involved in the trade I ran across Marty McSorley's name.

After seven seasons out of the playoffs under a carousel of head coaches that has included Craig MacTavish, Pat Quinn, Tom Renney and Ralph Krueger, it's perfectly understandable frustrated fans of the Edmonton Oilers are going to take a wait-and-see attitude about new bench boss Dallas Eakins.

There are so many interesting players still available this summer--NHL free agents, 20 year old graduating juniors without contracts--the mind actually boggles. Will the Oilers be active in these areas? MacT's aggressive summer of 2013 should continue through these weeks in August, and the final TC invite list may offer some surprises.

Taylor Hall was interviewed yesterday on Oilers Now, and he made it pretty clear that if Ryan Nugent-Hopkins isn’t ready to play on opening night he could easily find himself at centre to start 2013-14.
