The return in trade for Wayne Gretzky was without question substantial, but like most of the deals involving the Oilers’ Hall of Fame-calibre players it’s a deal that has only historical impact, with none of the descendants of that trade currently playing for Edmonton.
In terms of current impact from those old trades, it’s the Mark Messier deal that still pays dividends today.

Twenty-five years after the sale of Wayne Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings in a deal orchestrated by Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington, there are still plenty of hockey fans in this town who speak with a great deal of passion about Aug. 9, 1988. Is it any wonder?

I have watched the reaction to the Oilers’ acquisition of Jason LaBarbera this summer with interest, and I can’t shake the impression that he’s being underrated.

Ryan Smyth has played 1,198 regular season games, 95th most in NHL history. If he plays 50 games this year, he'll be in the top-80. If he plays 54 games, he'll pass Jari Kurri, and if he dresses for 57 games he'll pass Kevin Lowe. Smyth has had an outstanding career, that includes one Stanley Cup final appearance, two Olympics (won Gold in 2002) and he won the World Cup in 2004.
Smyth still has a passion for the game and he talked about what he's looking to accomplish this season.

It has been a few years since the Edmonton Oilers have had to select a new captain. Shawn Horcoff was the obvious choice after Ethan Moreau left. He had been here his whole career and was at the right age to assume the captaincy.
