It’s been nearly a week now since unrestricted free agency opened, and the best players on the market have already signed contracts with their new teams. For a team in need of depth NHL’ers, however, there remain options.
The Oilers are arguably such a team, and the good news is that there are still players available to fill the fourth line or spare centre slot.

For the first time in several years, the Edmonton Oilers first round selection does not boast breathtaking boxcar numbers. Darnell Nurse is a defenseman with a wide range of skills, a 'two-way' type, a 'complete player' in scouting terms. He projects as a fearsome defender who can intimidate and run over the opposition--Oiler fans recognize that kind of talent--they've seen it for years from the opposition. Nurse also offers an underrated offensive side. In this area, he is an emerging talent.

At his end of season press conference, Craig MacTavish was asked if there could be six to eight new Oilers, and he said “I think that’s fair.” With the moves so far this summer, the team is now in that range.

The Edmonton Oilers have added some impressive names to their roster so far this summer, and still have cap room, assets to trade and holes to fill. All they need is opportunities, and they may still be out there.

Yesterday's trade involving David Perron and Magnus Paajarvi showed me the Oilers are finished "waiting" for prospects to develop. That doesn't mean they won't allows Oscar Klefbom, Martin Marincin and Darnell Nurse time to mature, but Craig MacTavish won't be afraid to deal one of his young players for a more mature and proven, yet still young, NHL player.
The rebuild stage isn't completely over, but I believe the Oilers are entering a new phase that will be more about shaping the team instead of just stockpiling young talent.
