In a 2009-10 season that had a lot of disappointments, the play of Dustin Penner never managed to qualify. In fact, the previously much-maligned winger had the best season of his career, and transformed himself in the public’s eye from impossible to move contract to best forward on the team (at least, while Hemsky was out).

The Edmonton Oilers are extremely likely to have a strong rookie-of-the-year candidate in 2010-11. They have three outstanding prospects (Magnus Pääjärvi, Jordan Eberle, Chipper Jones) and enough job openings to make one believe anything is possible.

With the draft over and the first blush of free agency in the rear-view, this is an excellent time to have a look at the Oilers depth chart. It is striking to see just how much work is left to be done; I wonder if the Oilers want to address some of the obvious problems (G, veteran presence up front) this summer. A lottery pick becomes a distant bell with an improved lineup. It might be better to run with the kids.

The mind is a funny thing. It selects portions of events for storage, so that years down the line our memory "plays tricks on us." Many years from now, fans might check out Oilers draft history and think "boy Doug Lynch was a poor pick" without knowing (or remembering) his major injury and how it impacted Lynch's career.
