When it comes to evaluating prospects, the accepted time frame is 5 years; five seasons after a player is drafted, signed as a minor league free agent or begins his career with a PTO. That's when we can begin to view a player as a bust or a contributing hockey player. Before the five year window closes? We watch the arrows, good and bad.

The Edmonton Oilers shuffled their lines in practice today, including Eric Belanger - a player close to returning but not quite there yet.
By the look of things, Teemu Hartikainen will be on the outside looking in, which probably means he can expect a brief AHL stint when the Oilers eventually bring Belanger off the injured reserve list.

Let's all take a break from the breathtaking excitement of the Oilers 2013 season for a minute shall we? Are the Oilers the greatest team in modern history? Or are they bound to tank again making the 2013 Entry Draft the fourth most exciting first overall pick in the last four years?
There is plenty of time for that.

When it comes to the Edmonton Oilers, it seems everyone is looking "long term." Ralph Krueger is taking the longer view in regard to Nail Yakupov's development, and Ladislav Smid is willing to stay with the Oilers--wants to--but also wants the security of a long term deal. Does Ralph have it right? Is Laddy worth a long term deal?

I like Sam Gagner as a person and as a hockey player. I like his talent. I respect his competitive streak. I admire Gagner because his give-a-crap meter seems permanently pegged on high.
