The Oilers skate into Detroit hoping to match the effort they played with last Thursday in Dallas. Over the last 18 years the Stars owned the Oilers, but the Oilers dominated them last week, and tonight they face a Wings team they've only beaten 24 times in their last 73 meetings.

Can they slay the dragon for the second Thursday in a row?

HAWKS MUCH DIFFERENT THAN OILERS

The Chicago Blackhawks are off to the greatest start in NHL history, 21-0-3, and they are less than three years removed from winning the Stanley Cup, yet many Oilers fans, bloggers and pundits have suggested the Oilers should mirror the Hawks success.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I don't see that happening, at least not right away, if ever.

While it's up to debate exactly how long the Edmonton Oilers have been in a full-on rebuild and it makes for interesting speculation what the 2012-13 edition of the Oilers might become, there's no question the team fans see here and now has been built by Kevin Lowe and Steve Tambellini.

I'm hearing whispers that some Oiler fans believe the club made a mistake in drafting Nail Yakupov #1 overall. In times like these, it's important to remind ourselves of what the "experts" said at the time of the draft and about small sample sizes and how silly we can look in drawing short term conclusions.

Feast or famine

Wow. There really is no middle ground in the Northwest Division, is there?

Whether it's in the standings, with the Canucks pretty much feasting on the talent starved rest of the division, or in the front offices, where you could never accuse any of the GMs of being underfed, but sometimes it sure seems like they've starved their brains of oxygen.

That's right: it's feast or famine in the Northwest. (Yeah, I went there. Deal with it.)
