It's time to raise the age of draft eligible players

With the draft rapidly approaching, managers league wide are huddling with their scouts trying to put together a draft list that will fill their teams up with talent for years to come. They look at each player and try to project what he will become in two, five or ten years’ time.

Last offseason Ryan Smyth made it known he wanted to be traded from the LA Kings to the team where it all began - our beloved Edmonton Oilers. Daryl "Kay-Z" Katz got personally involved to make his wish a reality, telling Smyth that if he came back to Edmonton he would remain an Oiler for the rest of his career.

The Oilers’ professional scouting staff monitor and report on players in both the NHL and AHL. Their recommendations carry weight in Edmonton’s front office, and help general manager Steve Tambellini to make decisions on personnel moves, from free agency to the trade market.

They’re also a group we don’t typically spend a lot of time on.

YAKUPOV: FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The old saying is you never get a second chance to make a first impression. If that's true, Nail Yakupov did considerably better in his audition in front of reporters at Rexall Place today than I did with him. Perhaps I'll get a chance to take another swing at it after June 22.

WEEKEND WRAP: OILERS DOWN TO FIVE

Nail Yakupov arrived in town last night and since leaving EIA he's had a hectic schedule meeting with Oilers management, touring the dressing room, getting checked over by doctors and meeting Daryl Katz.

Yakupov is a legit 5'11". I stood beside him in this media scrum, and he's one of the few players under six feet who is actually as tall as he's listed in media guides. He is much thicker than Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was last year, but both of them possessed the same willingness to be the first overall pick.

Both are serious and respectful about going first overall, but Yakupov did reveal he has a sense of humour.
