CBC’s Elliotte Friedman made waves a few nights ago on Hockey Night in Canada when he reported that the Oilers had initially offered their head coaching job not to Ralph Krueger, but to former great Mark Messier. Today, he expanded on that report.

Craig MacTavish has made it clear that the Edmonton Oilers will be run differently under his watch, and that extends to the organization’s farm team in Oklahoma City, where the general manager is promising “more direction” on which prospects play than the team has seen in the past.

Aside from Devan Dubnyk, there is a lot of uncertainty at the goaltending position in Edmonton. With the number two and three slots in the organization both currently held by unrestricted free agents who aren’t expected to return, it’s no surprise general manager Craig MacTavish is saying things like “It’s an area of poor depth for our organization” and “We have to shore up our goaltending for sure.”
Is there a veteran NHL free agent who might fit the bill?

The day Edmonton drafted Mitchell Moroz, the Oilers were absolutely addressing need. Moroz--a big, tough winger who can skate and arrive in ill humor consistently--instantly moved to the top of the list of 'junior forwards other teams don't want to play against' in the organization. One year later, Moroz appears to be on the verge of a long awaited move up the depth chart to a skill line and offensive opportunity.
