With no training camp it looks to me that NHL teams are still disorganized in areas. Two areas that look out of sync for most of them are areas the Oilers are having success, the penalty kill and off the rush.

For the second time in six games Nail Yakupov came through with a huge goal for the Edmonton Oilers. Last Thursday he tied the game with 4.7 seconds remaining, and tonight he potted the winner from almost the identical spot on the ice and once again he batted the puck out of mid-air.

The first stop on a three-game-in-three-and-a-half-days-road-trip is tonight in Phoenix, in front of 8,000-10,000 fans. The Coyotes might not be in Phoenix long-term, because the crowds only come in the playoffs, but they are here now and Dave Tippett always has them well prepared.

When the Oilers traded for Mark Fistric, it was good news for the team because it added a reliable, penalty-killing veteran who plays the game with a physical edge. It was bad news for Theo Peckham, since penalty-killing and a physical edge were the two things he added from his spot at the bottom of the defensive depth chart.
Peckham was activated off injured reserve by the Oilers on Tuesday. Now he’s likely the eighth defenceman, competing for a third-pairing job with Ryan Whitney, Corey Potter and Mark Fistric. Is there something he can do that the others can’t?

Redline Report draft guru Kyle Woodlief says the 2013 entry draft is so deep there are players ranked in the mid-40s this season who would have been well inside the first round just a year ago. Perhaps Steve Tambellini knew what he was doing when asking for a 2013 pick in exchange for Andrew Cogliano a couple of years ago.
