Busy Day: Smid, Souray and Fraser (Updated)

‘Twas the day before free agency, and for the Oilers it was a busy one. First came news that the team had inked pending restricted free agent Ladislav Smid to a two-year contract. This was followed by the announcement that Sheldon Souray had been placed on unconditional waivers for the purposes of buying out his contract. Then we learned that Colin Fraser, freshly traded to Los Angeles in the Smyth deal, is seriously injured and will require surgery – leaving Kings’ G.M. Dean Lombardi miffed and a question mark on what happens next.

Steve Tambellini is slated to address these issues at a press conference any minute now.

Track Record: Acquiring Players Outside The Draft

I think it is fair to say that the majority of Oilers fans have been thrilled with the team’s performance at the draft table. Taylor Hall might be the headliner, but the ensemble of young players the Oilers have collected the last few years stacks up well against most anyone in the league.

Away from the draft table, the results have been less impressive. A glance at the Oilers roster reveals an assortment of players acquired by other means, and for the most part it is not a list that inspires one with confidence.

Marchant Retires, Along With Other Stories

Former Oiler Todd Marchant announced his retirement earlier today. After more than 1000 games in the best league in the world, Marchant will move directly into the position of Director of Player Development for the Anaheim Ducks.

Some days it  sucks being a fan of a back-to-back 30th place team, okay most days it does. You keep wanting, hoping and praying that your team will improve, but in reality you know it will be a few more years before you can actually draft one of them in your playoff draft.

I'm guessing it becomes a real drag around July 1st when you know that your team likely won't be making any significant signings, and you are destined to watch another season without playoffs.
