We’re nearing the end of the 2011-12 season now. The Oilers have a pair of games left on the schedule and will close out the season on Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks. From a team perspective, there isn’t much left to see; on the individual level there are the usual battles with guys trying to stay with the team or in the league. Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will be putting the final touches on campaigns that have them in the running for the Lady Byng and the Calder, respectively.

The latter point is the one I want to highlight this morning.

Changing my mind

I have to admit that when Dustin Penner was traded for a first round pick and Colten Teubert last year, I assumed Teubert was a toss in. I looked him up on the Internet and wasn't really impressed with what I saw.

WHO IS JUSTIN SCHULTZ?

Who is Justin Schultz?

By now I'm sure many of you have heard of Schultz, but don't know much about him. He was drafted 43rd overall by the Ducks in 2008, and then he played one more year in the BCJHL before heading to Wisconsin to play for the Badgers. For the past three seasons he's honed his skills under former NHLer Mike Eaves. In the past two seasons he's played 78 games and tallied 34 goals and 91 points.

Schultz was widely considered the best D-man in the NCAA this year, and he was a first-team All-American last year.

Can he help the Oilers? What are his best attributes?

With two games remaining on the Edmonton Oilers 2011-12 NHL season we find ourselves caring more about the 29th place local squadron then how the big shots at the top of the NHL ladder are faring. Call us a simple minded Edmontonian with hotdogs in each hand - but whatever.

Amidst all the suck, two topics are sticking out in our mind as of prime importance.
