This is Wally Pipp. Legend has it that (while the Yankees starting first baseman) he asked out of a ballgame due to a headache. Although there is evidence that the real story had more to do with a batting slump, the headache story sounds better so most go with it.
Replacing Pipp in the Yankee lineup on June 2, 1925? Some college kid named Lou Gehrig, who would go on to play 2,130 consecutive games at the position. Soon Pipp was off to the National League and Cincinnati, where the story goes he never asked for a day off again.

One of the things I'm looking for from the Oilers this season is gradual improvement. I wrote the team off as a playoff contender before the season began based on the roster, but that doesn't mean I was without optimism; the Oilers have an extremely young roster and I viewed this as a development year.
Looking for improvement, I decided to go back through the scoring chance data collected by Dennis King and published at mc79hockey.com. There's a noticeable trend in every aspect of the Oilers game.

Tom Renney has done a masterful job of saying and doing the right things as coach of the Edmonton Oilers, picking and choosing his words carefully in praising and criticizing his team this season.

Sometimes things appear to good to be true. However, every once in awhile you come across something so beautiful, so powerful, so impressive, you know in that instant this is special. Oilers fans were blessed with such an event 30+ years ago; what will it take for it to happen again?

On an Oilers team with more than a few pleasant surprises, it is the play of Ryan Whitney that stands out more than anything else to me. The 27 year-old defenceman leads the Oilers in a variety of statistical measures, and I think that to date he’s easily been the most valuable player on the team.
