The exodus to Europe is well underway, and a pair of Edmonton Oilers joined the discussion today. Lennart Petrell has signed with Helsinki, his old team in the top Finnish league, while Ladislav Smid is rumoured to be en route to the Czech Republic.

Like most of the readers here at OilersNation, I read Dmitry Chesnokov’s piece on Puck Daddy yesterday with interest. After quoting Rafik Yakubov, the director with Nail Yakupov’s KHL club (Nizhnekamsk Neftekhimik) as saying “The IIHF is not allowing Yakupov to play,” Chesnokov went on to speculate that the IIHF might be waiting for official NHL permission before issuing transfer cards.
According to IIHF communications director Szymon Szemberg, that speculation is “entirely incorrect, false and fabricated.”

The OKC Baron's training camp starts next Friday, followed by two exhibitions games on October 5th and 6th before their regular season starts October 12th. The 3.3 billion dollar question is: will the interest that NHL teams are paying their season ticket holders to keep their money on account, be sufficient to offset the inevitable drop in fan interest in the NHL as a product the longer the lockout continues? Hmmm, that gives me an idea...
