"Adversity doesn't build character, it reveals it."
I don't know who to credit with that old saying, but I've always believed it to be true. I'm wondering, in that context, what will be revealed about the Edmonton Oilers in the next month, a stretch that will see them play nine or 10 games without injured Ales Hemsky and captain Shawn Horcoff.

Linus Omark and Ryan O'Marra took part in their first practice and it looks like both will play tomorrow v. the Lightning. They have been playing on a line in OKC for most of the year and tomorrow they will have Ryan Jones on their wing. Sam Gagner will replace Shawn Horcoff between Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle, while Dustin Penner moves to the RW alongside Andrew Cogliano and Magnus Paajarvi. Gilbert Brule will skate on the fourth line with Colin Fraser and either JF Jacques or Zack Stortini.

Ever since he broke into the league as an 18-year old, Sam Gagner’s been a regular in the Oilers’ shootout rotation. Initially, it made sense, as Gagner’s signature 3000 dekes move fooled goaltenders. By the end of his rookie season, however, Gagner had scored just five times on 17 attempts – a 29.4% success rate, just below average for an NHL shooter.

With Shawn Horcoff out for at least two months with a sprained MCL in his right knee and Ales Hemsky gone for a month with the tender groin, the Edmonton Oilers are again NHL draft lottery contenders.
