UPDATED 10:45 MDT

Just received the following dispatch from Gregor:

“My gut says it will be Pat Quinn as head coach with Tom Renney as associate coach.

I can’t get any confirmation on that, but that’s my guess.

Either way, this is Tambellini’s biggest decision so I won’t be surprised if he goes with guys he knows and trusts. He can’t afford a George Burnett type of situation.

The new coach has to be a hard-ass that the veterans will pay attention to. That is Quinn.

The associate needs to be a technical guy. That is Renney.

I don’t know who will be the assistant, but I hear that Buchburger will be in the organization in some capacity, but not as coach.

I will have more after the presser…or tune in to TEAM 1260 for all the reaction.

According to our very own patented (uh, sort of?) Oilers New Aggregator 2.0®, the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club has called a news conference today at noon mountain time. Could this herald the arrival of our long-awaited head coach? Will Steve Tambellini tell us what he brought to work for lunch today?

WILL THERE BE PUDDING?

In my mind, this can mean two things: we’re going to either hear who the new head coach is, or it’s going to be some BS about another largely irrelevant (to fans, anyway) front-office appointment. Let’s hope it’s the former.

DISCUSS.

great, Quinn knows so much about 90’s style hockey… let’s face it, until the Oilers make some major moves he’s not going to be able to do much better with this team than Mac T – prepare for another mediocre season before an exciting joust for 8th place.

Hey Mark – where's all the 'good vibrations' man? Come on, come on!

So what coach would be good enough for you?

Did I say he wasn't good enough?

I said that his success in one world jr tourney doesn't mean "he's good with young players". If he would have won gold with Latvia, then you can start to build a case. Winning a tournament you are supposed to win… on your home soil, doesn't prove alot.

Well the people of Rexall Place are safe for another coaching tenure. I would have done terrible things if Marc Crawford, the human piece of scum, was to become our head coach. But alas there is no need.

I think you can assume the PK will be much better under this duo, also as the post above you can bet this will attract a few UFA's that want to play for either Quinn or Renney. If Renney tells Tambi he thinks Jagr can still play at a high level the Oil will do alot to get him out of that contract in Russia. Why is it that we need to get a player out of a contract over there but they can just sign any NHL player while there contract is still in effect?

Not those words exactly. Just seems like nothing ever pleases you unless someone agrees with you and says Horc isn't overpaid because he isn't a 7 million dollar player.

Actually it wasn't those words at all, their was no secret message. I said people blow his world jr experience and it's correlation to "working with young players" way out of proportion.

I'm cautiously optimistic, I'm sure he's a fine coach and the simply fact that we've made a change should add 2-4 wins to last years record. That said, unless:

    1. Major wholes are filled personel wise

    Or

    2. Gagner plays 65 games rather then 25 and Cogs plays 80 like he played the first 55… the team will still be on the bubble.

    @ RossCreek:
Don't think so. Darryl Sutter advised the media today that he is probably the best choice to coach the Flames next season. This is due to either his big ego or the owners may have come to this conclusion due to Sutter's firing of Keenan (one year left on his big contract). Money talks and, besides, Sutter may have difficulty in getting a good replacement as Sutter uses his coaches as scapegoats for all his mistakes as GM. Not happy days here in Calgary!

@ DonDon He said he's recieved several calls over the weekend from out of work coaches. He also said to suggest that it will be him because of money issues is ridiculous. What sense does it make to spend 50+ mil on a roster but cheap out on a coach because of 1 mil. If the owners are willing to spend the necessary dollars on the players to win, why wouldn't they be willing to spend the necessary dollars for the right coach? I'm not sure who I think it SHOULD be at the moment. Will be interesting to see what happens.

@ DonDon Also, the Flames powerplay sucked down the stretch yet Keenan hardly ever practiced the PP. The Flames need a COACH, not a motivator. Keenan isn't an X's and O's kind of guy, and that is what Calgary needs. Wouldn't have minded seeing Tom Renney get a look.
