Radio Ga-Ga II: Bombastic Bob brings the Oilers brand to TEAM 1260

As Kevin Lowe likes to say, expect the unexpected. I’m guessing that having Bob Stauffer return to TEAM 1260 with a two-hour radio show dedicated to the Edmonton Oilers ranks right up there with Mike Comrie signing on for a second tour in the City of Champions.

While the latter is a work in progress, the former — a possibility I wrote about June 13 — is officially a go, as first reported by Jason Gregor this morning. The Oilers, 630 CHED and TEAM 1260 will announce the launch of Oilers Lunch with Bob Stauffer on TEAM 1260 Tuesday morning.

Stauffer, who left his popular drive-time show, Total Sports, after five years last summer to join 630 CHED as colour analyst alongside Rod Phillips, will continue his game night duties on Oilers broadcasts home and away while doing the two-hour Oilers Lunch on TEAM 1260 Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Are you thinking WTF? Are you wondering how Bombastic Bob can wear two hats and work for both stations? Are you expecting a diet of Bob Lite for Oilers Lunch?

Selling the brands

The way I see it, having Stauffer work the microphone for two stations is a slam-dunk win for both outfits, the Oilers and, most important, listeners of sports radio in town.

— Owner Daryl Katz wants more exposure for the Oilers brand, and this provides that. CHED, the rights holder with the bigger numbers, keeps those rights and provides fans the total package — pre-game show, game presentation and post-game show — on game nights.

— TEAM 1260 welcomes back a host who produced the best numbers the station has ever had in the drive-time slot. Say what you want about Stauffer, he draws a crowd. In the 1 p.m.-3 p.m. slot, he’ll not only give 1260 a boost in that segment of the afternoon, he’ll provide an excellent lead-in to Jason Gregor’s Just A Game, which has been staking out its own audience since taking over from Total Sports.

— Listeners who suggest Stauffer’s bite has been somewhat muzzled since moving over to 630 CHED — something that comes with being the rights holder — will again get his take on things, and I’m betting you’ll be surprised how edgy it’ll be.

— Like I wrote in June, having two strong stations on the airwaves that are loaded with Oiler content is better than having just one. CHED will remain the big dog, but having TEAM 1260 close the ratings gap in the time slots involving the Oilers will keep both sharp, no?

Tell it like it is

So, is Stauffer going to be throwing underhand on Oilers Lunch like he does on broadcast nights with 630 CHED?

I don’t think so, and if you’ve been paying attention to game night broadcasts, I think you’ll agree Phillips and Stauffer play it more down the middle and are more critical of the Oilers than any other broadcast tandem in the NHL. At least that’s the way I see it.

Granted, Stauffer doesn’t rant and rave on CHED broadcasts like he did on Total Sports, and he’s lost his most reliable material with the departure of Craig MacTavish, but game nights are a different gig.

My best guess is Stauffer will have plenty of latitude to call it like he sees it on Oilers Lunch, and that he’ll do exactly that. Anything less will defeat the purpose of this uncommon set-up.

Stay tuned.

No way CHED is happy about this but really who cares. They have had their way in this town for far too long. Katz wants the Oiler brand out there more and I don't blame him a bit. His team, he calls the shots. CHED does very little for the Oilers until the evening and hopefully this will be a wakeup call for them as it looks like this could be the beginning of the end of CHED and the Oil. This is a win win for the Oilers and their fans.

Why would the ON guys let you waste one of their paid 10 blogs from you on this piece? I read the whole thing waiting for something new – this should've been posted as a comment under Gregor's blog.

If I knew how to post a link on here, I'd point to Gregor's article and then say something to the tune of 'welcome to 3 hours ago'.

Your next article should be random thoughts about Mike Sillinger. It would be riveting.

Good news,.. I've typically enjoyed Stauff's analyses..
I havent lived in edmonton for a long time now so I only know his ched work, but I like how he has been able to criticize without crucifying… anyways.. good for him..

I don't know. Why don't you ask them? Then again, if you're just looking to take a shot — and you are — why not just link to your last comment directed my way? I recall that to be a pissy little bit of baiting as well. Your next comment should be about how I'm not that good at what I do. That would be riveting.

  • @ Tull:

You're a bit late to the game, and definitely off-base taking a shot at Brownlee about this piece.

Since you failed to pay attention, I'll point out that a few commenters (including myself, incidentally) were wondering asking Robin what the implications were of having Stauff on CHED and the TEAM, and whether or not he'd be muzzled by the club on Oilers Lunch.

Before you take a shot at someone, make sure you have the basis to do so, please. Sheesh.

    with love,

I will certainly TUNE IN to old Stauff !!!

THese comments make me laugh. How you think one person can keep a station afloat is laughable. The TEAM needed three solid shows. They used to have JAG and Total Sports, their biggest problem was they didn't replace Gregor at night right away. Now they have a great drive show with Gregor, a night show again and with Fraser and Graham I think it will be good. The morning is coming along, and now Stauffer makes it four. That is how you build a good station. Not one guy. I find it funny how some think one guy makes a station. Wake up.

That would be like saying if Gregor or Brownlee or Wanye left the Nation that the site would die. It wouldn't if they replaced whoever left…

Since I live in BC this decision really doesn't affect me a whole lot so I am going to focus on another topic mentioned on the sly in this post. Brownlee, since you have been mentioning Comrie to the Oil in hersay and rumour etc. Lets just say it actually goes down. Where would you slot him into the current line-up barring any further player movement/signings? Sorry for bringing this up slightly off topic but its just something I was curious to hear your opinion on.

  • Robin Brownlee

    @ ShaunDoe:
Actually, I've been pretty adamant for some time it's not hearsay or interest and have said, despite items downplaying or denying that interest in other media outlets, that the sides are talking.

And, all along, I've said I don't see how he fits on the current roster. I haven't slotted him anywhere because the mix is already up in the air without him in it. Is Mike a third-line centre now who can play some top-six minutes? I'm not sure. He can play wing, but where and with whom? How does he address the need for added grit? He doesn't.

I am wondering if all this talk is precursor to a roster move that is already in the works. Bring in Comrie for any one of the x players mentioned in trades already. I guess adding Schremps contract to the mix makes things a whole lot more muddled than before. Anyone know if he has to clear waivers if he doesn't make the line up out of training camp or would he only have to clear if he is called up sometime during the season?

  • B.C.B.

Thanks for all the news Brownlee. But as much as I hate to admit it, I have to agree with Tull (the Troll). Training Camp is just around the corner, and for us folks out of town, this is the best place to come for Oilers' news (much better then the online versions of the local papers). Please don't use your excellent articles on media crap. I will need real information on training camp for the next few weeks, but you and Gregor are the only ones that can provide it. Thanks for all the articles over the last few months, I have really enjoyed them.

  • Clarkenstein

    @ Robin Brownlee:
Not sure why everyone is worried about how the "fit" will be. Rememember, this is a new coaching staff with new ideas and rather than coming to camp with firm ideas of how the team will look before day 1 I like the idea of a wide open "tryout" for the next month. Let's see who is motivated and who wants to go through the motions again. Should be much more interesting.

Maybe Bob has enough pull to get Bryn and Jake another gig? Neilson and Chase's show in the morning is knowledgeable and hockey packed but I kinda miss the easy going slow wake up with Bryn & Jake. I used to miss Bob's show at one point too, but now I'm likin' Gregor's. It's definitely a bonus to get Bob back as a guy can only take so much of that blowhard american "feelin you!" sports update guy from fox radio.

  • The Menace

My only concern about this new show is that it might lead to less Oil-related coverage from JAG. I hope this is not the case – I'm sure everyone here can attest that this town's appetite for everything Oilers is insatiable! Can’t wait for this to get started.

  • Partytown25

Rome, Stauffer and Gregor from 10-6. Better than the Oil's first line!!

Brownlee, I guess this throws a wrench into a dream of a one hour lacrosse only show from 2-3 on Fridays. Too bad we didn't have a local media guy who played the game growing up, knows the game, and was in a position to help let everyone know that the best game in Rexall is played on turf…

    How's that for off topic.

  • Robin Brownlee

    @ Partytown25:

Doesn't mean Jason won't keep doing segments on the game. I'm all for that.

(And the game should be played on polished concrete like the old days).

  • KenL

    F…AWESOME!!!!!

Bobby back on the Team, where he did his best work. In the last 6 months, I found the drive home show without Bobby a chore to listen to. If it weren't for the guests and fill ins by Will, my radio dial would had been elsewhere.

While I'm not naive to believe that Bobby has free rein to voice his thoughts like he did a year ago, I don't fear a drop off in unfiltered opinions. Bobby's appearances on Dan Tenser's show are restrained, but he still manages to be critical without being overly critical.

Hopefully this means a return of the media round table, Kelly Hrudey, and George Laraque. Bob always got great mileage and entertainment with these guests – ESPECIALLY BIG George! Maybe DQ will finally sign on as a sponsor. And if Bobby plugs the U of A teams again, I might actually start going again.

  • hide.the.beer.klima.is.here

Having Bob is back will be sweet. Hopefully he doesn't tow the Oilers' line too much. Nevertheless, having Bob and Gregor back to back will make for an excellent 5 hours of radio. Seems to me The Team is finally getting its act together. Keep it up.

Bum Stauffer with testicle clamps may be underwhelming at best….whats holding Robin back from working this slot? Will we get to here more Brownlee participation between those two slots?

I get the cynicism, but I'm telling you Stauffer will be as critical as he wants with this new platform. As over-the-top as some of his stuff from Total Sports? No, but that doesn't mean he can't and won't take an honest look at the Oilers. Let's wait and see.

As for me working this slot, I'm not even close to having the polish to carry a radio show as a host, but I'd welcome the chance to co-host with Bob again in addition to my appearances with Gregor. All that will be hashed out in the next little while.

I'd like to hear you all Thursday afternoon. Why not join Bobby @ 1:00 for 2 hours and then stay til 5:00 with Jason for 2 more POWER HOURS!!

Would that be your preference or would you rather put in 2 hours on a separate day (Tuesday)? Hmmm… maybe that would be better…

  • David S

I know Robin is a journalist by trade, but I gotta tell you guys that in my opinion Thursday's JAG with Gregor and Brownlee is easily the best segment. I'd be thrilled to hear those two together a few more times a week.

  • Bill

    Well, well, well….

It's looking like a pretty good lineup from the morning all the way to 6pm. The new morning show…Rome…Stauffer (delete the Fox clowns)and finally Gregor. Skip Prime Time Sports and more Fox clowns and tune in to the local show at 9pm.

1260 is finally getting it….more quality local programming IS better.

And, I'll chime in with the guys that are calling for more Brownlee on the air.

Great move by 1260 and the Oilers.
