Radio Ga-Ga II: Bombastic Bob brings the Oilers brand to TEAM 1260

As Kevin Lowe likes to say, expect the unexpected. I’m guessing that having Bob Stauffer return to TEAM 1260 with a two-hour radio show dedicated to the Edmonton Oilers ranks right up there with Mike Comrie signing on for a second tour in the City of Champions.

While the latter is a work in progress, the former — a possibility I wrote about June 13 — is officially a go, as first reported by Jason Gregor this morning. The Oilers, 630 CHED and TEAM 1260 will announce the launch of Oilers Lunch with Bob Stauffer on TEAM 1260 Tuesday morning.

Stauffer, who left his popular drive-time show, Total Sports, after five years last summer to join 630 CHED as colour analyst alongside Rod Phillips, will continue his game night duties on Oilers broadcasts home and away while doing the two-hour Oilers Lunch on TEAM 1260 Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Are you thinking WTF? Are you wondering how Bombastic Bob can wear two hats and work for both stations? Are you expecting a diet of Bob Lite for Oilers Lunch?

Selling the brands

The way I see it, having Stauffer work the microphone for two stations is a slam-dunk win for both outfits, the Oilers and, most important, listeners of sports radio in town.

— Owner Daryl Katz wants more exposure for the Oilers brand, and this provides that. CHED, the rights holder with the bigger numbers, keeps those rights and provides fans the total package — pre-game show, game presentation and post-game show — on game nights.

— TEAM 1260 welcomes back a host who produced the best numbers the station has ever had in the drive-time slot. Say what you want about Stauffer, he draws a crowd. In the 1 p.m.-3 p.m. slot, he’ll not only give 1260 a boost in that segment of the afternoon, he’ll provide an excellent lead-in to Jason Gregor’s Just A Game, which has been staking out its own audience since taking over from Total Sports.

— Listeners who suggest Stauffer’s bite has been somewhat muzzled since moving over to 630 CHED — something that comes with being the rights holder — will again get his take on things, and I’m betting you’ll be surprised how edgy it’ll be.

— Like I wrote in June, having two strong stations on the airwaves that are loaded with Oiler content is better than having just one. CHED will remain the big dog, but having TEAM 1260 close the ratings gap in the time slots involving the Oilers will keep both sharp, no?

Tell it like it is

So, is Stauffer going to be throwing underhand on Oilers Lunch like he does on broadcast nights with 630 CHED?

I don’t think so, and if you’ve been paying attention to game night broadcasts, I think you’ll agree Phillips and Stauffer play it more down the middle and are more critical of the Oilers than any other broadcast tandem in the NHL. At least that’s the way I see it.

Granted, Stauffer doesn’t rant and rave on CHED broadcasts like he did on Total Sports, and he’s lost his most reliable material with the departure of Craig MacTavish, but game nights are a different gig.

My best guess is Stauffer will have plenty of latitude to call it like he sees it on Oilers Lunch, and that he’ll do exactly that. Anything less will defeat the purpose of this uncommon set-up.

Stay tuned.

This is great! Looking forward to hearing his new show. I especially like that it's just about the Oilers. While I get that it's important to cover different sports, it's comforting to know that I'm not inadvertantly tuning into something lame like NASCAR or gay por….I mean MMA.

Excellent move – The organizational moves off the ice this summer have been splendid imo. I think this holistic business picture will make to the ice in a couple of seasons when some burdensome contracts come off the books. For now, I feel with moves like the Oilers and their brand have all the arrows pointed in the right direction.

Oh and Robin, don't blow your article wad 4 days in September. I can't stand another 10-day period having to sift through comments b/c you've met your quota!!!! Seriously, great work man.

Great news. Was not a big fan of Chris Meyer's show and often found my self switching stations till just a game came on. Rome is pretty good and i do like to hear the interviews he has on there, but he sometimes gets shut off as well. I think the biggest thing is just local content and im glad now that there is going to be more of that. Good move.

So does this mean even more Brownlee on the radio?

    @ patty:
I think there's room for some overlap in commentators from show to show because people like Barnes and Rishaug provide insight. As for a roundtable set-up, I don't know if that's in the plans.

As for the air-time arrangement with Oilers Lunch, I have no idea how that will work. I think the show will start next week, possibly Thursday.

    @ Robin Brownlee:
It would be classy of them to mention it I guess.
Since you're putting me on the spot, what are the odds of doing an edmonton media roundtable thing again? It could be cannabalizing Gregor's guest list somewhat, but those were always very entertaining.
Is Bob buying the airtime like before? not that it matters at all, just curious.
What day does the show start?

Odd time for lunch? I hope that's just a working name until they can come up with some a tad more original. That said, this is great news. Hope they'll be podcasting it!

Fair point, but I'd like to think Stauffer's not the only one who is paying attention to what's going on.

  • Ender the Dragon

While Bob might be tempted to lay down a barrage or two occassionally directed against the Oilers, the reality is that he'll have to keep it focussed on fairly intangible subjects; the coaching is suspect, our #1LW is underproducing, our powerplay is too predictable, yada yada. Any of the really good dirt he might come accross he's going to have to sit on, though. After all, he's still employed by those people who he'd be snitching on. If, for example, he stumbled accross rumours of someone in the organization who wasn't happy and wanted out. A regular MSM guy could let that fly right away; so-and-so isn't happy and that's being reflected in their performance, they might say. Stauffer , on the other hand, couldn't breathe a word of that on air as it could conceivably harm the organization's ability to negotiate a settlement, trade, relocation, promotion, whatever. He might be a hit on the TEAM with a story like that, but he'd find a pink slip in the next Oilers envelope that came his way.

Bob may attempt some edginess on his new afternoon show, but he'll never be completely free to tell everything he knows or even suspects.

    @ patty:
That's your big question out of all this? That's what stuck with you?

Well, as long as Stauffer is doing Oilers game night broadcasts on 630 CHED, I'd hope they'd at least make a mention of it. Seems like the all-in-the-family, classy thing to do, no?

  • Owner Daryl Katz wants more exposure for the Oilers brand

Yeah you almost never hear anything about the Oilers here in Edmonton. The only way to get more exposure would be OilTV I think.

  • patty

    @ Robin Brownlee:
"The Oilers, 630 CHED and TEAM 1260 will announce the launch of Oilers Lunch with Bob Stauffer on TEAM 1260 Tuesday morning."

Am I missing something? How does CHED factor into this announcement?

    Either way it's fantastic news.

  • Deep Oil

Possible relationship opportunity for the Team 1260 to aquire the Oiler broadcast property down the road, as Astral is the rightsholder in Montreal. I am sure that Bob will have an eager listening audience including Oiler management and owner.
