Housekeeping: State of the Nation

Pull up a stump, younglings. Let’s take a moment to look away from the train-wreck of a team that we’re still punishing ourselves by watching and talk about YOU. And by YOU, I mean US: OilersNation.com.

This site is over two years old now, and like a drooling, irritating puppy that you just want to swat over the nose with your latest FHM issue, it’s as spunky as ever. Even though OilersNation’s second birthday has come and gone, and I spent most of it drunk of my ass and weeping, I’d like to look back on the life of OilersNation, which back in November 2007 was but a gleam in the eye of one Wanye Gretz.

That’s WAN-YE, by the way. Like Obi-wan Yay. Though it doesn’t bother him, for reason it drives me nuts when people call him Wayne. But that’s the difference between Wanye and I: I’m an uptight nerd, and he’s a suave, barrel-chested hobo with a website and a dream.

I’m not going to talk to you right now about how much we’ve grown, because we really have and I think it’s obvious to most just given the comment counts on articles. We’ve grown not just in terms of writers and content, but in terms of traffic as well… in spite of the beloved Oilers’ recent fortunes on the ice. Buoyed by this growth, we decided to try a few more things:

  • We created some limited edition T-shirts which sold rather quickly (don’t worry, there’s more swag on the way)
  • We created a Twitter account, so we could interact more intimately with you knuckleheads
  • Wanye went away to Europe to find himself. All he found were a bunch of STIs. So he brought them back with him
  • We partnered with Original Joe’s on Beat The Heat, which has raised over $4,500 for local women’s shelters so far
  • We sent out a bunch of OilersNation stickers to fans on Twitter. They’ve started posting them to our new Flickr Photo Group (which you should all join)
  • One of our readers created a rather fantastic DFF badge
  • Willis managed to get a job at TheScore.ca because of (or in spite of) his work at OilersNation
  • Gregor’s hair has miraculously started to grow back*
  • Brownlee’s hair has miraculously started to grow back*
  • OilersNation citizens sent Gregor to the 2009 draft AND raised money for a local charity
  • We’re in the process of launching a pretty outstanding new site feature that you should see very soon

Just when you think things are in the tank, you can sit down, look back and say to yourself, "We’ve come a long way." Because we have. And we’re not stopping, oh my no. We’re letting Citizen Alpha, our code monkey, take a week’s furlough in Cuba so he can dine with Castro. But as soon as he’s back in sunny Canada, we’re going to whip his ass so hard, he’ll wish he’d defected to the Communist nation.

So, Happy Belated Birthday, OilersNation, you big slobbering puppy of a website. I hope you never die.

*This might be because of the hair tonic they’ve been using, but the Nation will take credit for it.

  • HE Pennypacker

The best part is that this is all happening during some of the most frustrating and disappointing times for our beloved hockey team. That's what makes Oiler fans so awesome.

In honor of ON's birthday, I've been drinking more than usual today!

  • Ninjafoot

It is nice to be able to get good seats here at the Nation while the Oilers suck.

Can you imagine the animal house that is going to erupt around here when they finally start winning and the bandwagon starts to fill up again?

    • Agreed, but I know that there are plenty of real fans out there that just can't afford the money to sit there and be miserable with the rest of us in public.

My Oilers half price single was row two last week. I only sit that close to the ice when I go to see the Oilers in the states. I'll enjoy it while I can.

    • Jodes

I hear you Ninjafoot.. Remember the good old days when ticketmaster would crash when mini packs or gameday tickets went on sale?

Nearly 3 weeks after the latest mini packs went on sale, there are still LOTS of seats left.. Now the website is saying you have until Feb 4th to buy them.

Maybe if they would have put them on sale BEFORE Xmas they wouldn't have this problem, but hey, it only makes sense to ask people to pay 100's to 1000's of dollars on hockey tickets after Xmas doesn't it?

As for the "animal house".. I don't think we'll have to worry about that unless:

      1) We trade away 3-4 guys and get solid guys in return (yeah right)

      2) This off season when Tambellini cleans house (Just like last year)

      3) We get a superstar UFA signing over the summer who actually WANTS to come here.

Since none of these will really happen, I think we'll be okay. But maybe in 3-4 years.. look out!

Gregor's hair has miraculously started to grow back*
Brownlee's hair has miraculously started to grow back*

Isn't it obvious that Oilersnation had the tonic?

        • We got hooked up with Brownlee through a friend. We picked him because he's an outstanding writer, and because I was afraid that if we didn't do a deal with RB, he would choke me in my sleep. So Wanye and I took him out for lunch to sell him on the vision, and the rest is history.

Gregor was approached after we signed Brownlee. I don't recall why we chose to approach him, just that Wanye really wanted to get a radio guy on the show. And because Gregor's hilarious.

If site traffic hasn't slowed this year with the sh!ttacular play of the Oil, has it's rate of growth slowed?

I've been wondering for a while if the businesses that are supported by the team, such as this site, local bars, and stores selling Oiler merchandise, have been hurt much by the terrible season. In my mind, if they're loosing money, some of these people who have in effect invested in the team have suffered even more than the fans who buy tickets: at least ticket-buyers aren't dependent on the team to put food on their tables.

  • Travis Dakin

I've said it before and I will say it again, Bingofuel, Wanye, Robin, Willis, Gregor and sometimes Amber… Thanks for actually putting some effort into making a great idea a reality. This little site has brought a surprising amount of joy to my life during this troubling time as an Oilers fan.

    Much love.

    Happy Birthday Nation!

No mention of Ghost Riding the Whip?

EDIT: Just tried to find the old ghost ride the whip vid that I loved, and sadly, it has been removed from you tube… 🙁

  • The only concern I have with the continued success of the site is the fact that there are a finite number of ways to incorporate the word "Ogden" into usernames.

    What if we run out?

NOTE: I'll go back to normal soon enough

Happy birthday ON! Now Bingo, when can we start buying gear?

  • Dominoiler

I think its funny that so many people slagged gregor for posting something about the rush (oh yeah, snagging some top player from portland) and so many people were livid in the comments.. 'this is an Oilers Only Website'..

Now it looks like they are your biggest advertiser, haha.. its evolution baby…

Congrats (collectively) on the two years, thanks for many great reads on various levels of .. hmmm.. analysis and wit?!..

  • OB1 Team Yakopov - F.S.T.N.F

So exactly do you give a website the bumps?

    ~ponders~

guess we'll just have to pull a FMJ and tie Wanye and bingofuel down give 'em a sock beating. Two shots for everyone!!

oh, and yes – congrats on annee numero deux!

(that's how a Canadian in socal rolls – franglish!!)

  • If this site is two years old that must mean that the girl from Harry Potter is over 18 now! That is how I have been measuring time for almost 5 years – counting down till her birthday.

*runs off to buy a suit and plane ticket to "somewhere"*

Thanks for the love everyone. We don't know what we would do if it weren't for all of you*

*we'd go back to being male prosititutes

  • Heavyd

  • SquidRx

"… and I spent most of it drunk of my ass and weeping…"

If I was drunk of your ass I would be weeping too. I bet you were the only one drinking it that night.

Happy Birthday ON. I would be lost without you.

  • Max Powers - Team HME Evans

Awesome site guys. Good quality reading every day. You guys, Lowetide and POTF are the only Oilers' blogger sites I have bookmarked. Keep up the good writing and hilarious pics.

p.s. good one on recruiting Brownlee, hreally is an excellent writer.

  • Sammy D

On behalf of the lurkers… congrats on two years! Here to two more when the Oil will be at the tail end of the rebuild and a solid middle of the road team with some upside to them.
