UPDATED: LOWE-DOWN ON BRADY SPECULATION

For now, file this one under unsubstantiated speculation, but there’s a suggestion circulating out in the Twitter-verse that Kevin Lowe could at some point return as GM of the Edmonton Oilers.

A person listed on Twitter as Greg Brady — @bradyfan590Toronto — who has in excess of 7,600 followers, has put the possibility of a return to the GM’s chair by Lowe — with the blessing and backing of owner Daryl Katz — out there in several tweets tonight.

Here’s what Brady — the link is here twitter.com/#!/bradyfan590 — has offered via Twitter in seven different tweets over the last couple of hours (as of 10 p.m.):

THE BUZZ

— "Would I bet it happens, yes? Could it take upwards of 24 months? Oh yeah. Lowe’s only 52. He’ll be back."

— "I think he still has a daughter he wants to see thru finishing HS…after that, empty nest..back at it!"

— "Also totally logical…he wanted to see his kid, Keegan, play a lot more..now he’s been drafted."

— "who’s the blogger? Whoever is Katz’s buddy/henchman is talking a lot with KEvin about a timeframe."

— "Hugely so….Lowe moved upstairs because he was working himself bonkers, & kids needed him around more. STRONG source."

— "Katz pushing Lowe behind the scenes…not sure Lowe will commit. HIS decisions weren’t best, either."

— "Well, they cannot be 30th again. Kevin Lowe’s getting pressed by Katz to come back as GM. For now, no."

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED?

Corey Graham of TEAM 1260 in Edmonton mentioned this on the air tonight, so it’s out there in this market, aside from circulating in the Twitter community. I’ve got no information at this point to substantiate or disprove anything Brady is suggesting, but it’s likely worth sniffing around on.

Might Lowe, now Edmonton’s president of hockey operations, be interested in a return to his old job after a respite from the glare of the spotlight? Maybe, especially if the boss is pushing it. Is it possible Steve Tambellini’s future as GM is in doubt if the Oilers don’t show substantial improvement this season? Absolutely. This might shape up as a case of, as Lowe likes to say, "Expect the unexpected."

Stay tuned.

UPDATE

Greg Brady took the time write about his tweets regarding Lowe and reaction to it in his blog at FAN 590 today. You can find that here: blog.rogersbroadcasting.com/fan590_gregbrady/2011/10/05/nothing-pending-with-oils/

gee, if this story is true, way to give Tambo the time he needs to see the rebuild through! me thinks someone on *Twit* ter is already getting impatient with the rebuild!

      • Dipstick

I have a call into Lowe but haven’t heard back.

If Lowe says he isn’t interested — I know, what else is he supposed to say without putting Tambellini in a bad spot? — we have to take that at face value until we find out otherwise.

Like I said, I don’t know if Lowe and Katz have had a “what-if?” conversation. Lowe is a part of the decision-making process now without the day-to-day spotlight that comes with Tambellini’s job.

After watching the latest Shanahan video I’d like to applaud Brendan for making it abundantly clear that attacks to the head are OK as long as the target is an Edmonton Oiler player. How else do you explain that the two illegal attacks from Saturday weren’t even worth commenting on in an official capacity.

      • Rob...

They have said nothing, yet other incidents that happened the same day were commented upon by the very next day.

What I’m saying is that even a statement suggesting that ‘the Edler and/or Sturm incidents were under review and further information will follow’ would have been highly appropriate on Sunday… it’s now Wednesday and Shani is busy putting out PR videos on how warm and fuzzy hits are delivered instead of taking care of business.

What about the talk of the Oilers announcing the hiring of a new CEO tomorrow. An out-of-towner with former connections to the Oilers. Gretzky in town all last week. Hints of Katz wanting Lowe back as GM. Katz is known for his love of the Oilers of old. I haven’t posted in a long time, but I’m starting to get worried of where we’re headed.

  • stevezie

I think we need to get this arena done. I can’t remember any major infrastructure getting this much ballyhoo around town. And yes, an arena is infrastructure, its something many citizens will use and want.
That is infrastructure. Get it done.
Maybe the city could blackball Northlands a bit by taking away some privileges.
Use the MSI fund to fund the 100M from the province.
This infrastructure will benefit the city a lot more than any overpass ever did.

I’m all for letting Tambellini go but maybe wait till his contract expires at the end of the year. Leave Lowe at a distance and bring in an outsider like Doug Weight or Mark Recchi. Weight will benifit this season working in that Islander organization. Let Weight have a go at it here next summer.

      • Quicksilver ballet

You have to admit Obbie, Doug would make a fine GM. He might not have the experience Yzerman had when he took on the Lightning job but thats what they do here in Edmonton, isn’t it, learn on the fly, trial by fire?

I’m also fine with Lowe taking over. I like Lowes semi fatalistic veiws of some players. He’s a little more black and white, either you can play or you can’t in Lowes eyes. Hindsight has shown he’s made some mistakes but when he comes to work i do feel his goal is to make the Oilers a more competitive hockey club.

This could just be Katz checking the temperature of the water before he jumps in. He just wants to see what he’s up against on a move like this. Have to believe this is certainly Tambos last yr here. He’s accomplished what he was brought in here to do. Should be interesting to see if Tambellini gets a severence package or not a penney more from Daryl after this season.

It is hard to realy evaluate Tambo without knowing his mandate. That said, it seems to me he has done some excellent things and some terible things. The farm is way better, but would Klo not have done the same if he had the financial means? Remember, Klo did not have rich owner to float the boat. I for one would love to have Klo back, the guy is ultra competitive, bleeds copper and blue and we always competed, never finished last…twice

  • Zamboni Driver

One guy in Edmonton thinks Lowe as GM is a great idea.

Ole #10 who has a contract coming up in a couple of years.

Probably be good for about $9 mil a year.

  • Milli

Is this an E5? I know many of you posting here saying no return for Lowe are the same ones that said Tambo was just Lowes puppet. What changed? Nothing. Tambo has never been Lowes puppet. It has clearly become Tambo’s rebuild. Whether or not it’s a succesfull one remains to be seen. I think he deserves a year of watching the team he has put together without leading the league in man games lost to injury.

If we want to have an article about the job Tambo has done versus what Lowe did and debate which one is better, then fine let’s do that. How ever i think we should leave the NHL rumor mill to sites like Hockey Buzz.

    • Quicksilver ballet

Tencer appears to be paraphrasing and he’s enough of a house man that I expect he knows how he’s supposed to spin this. I want to hear precisely what Lowe said – he’s always seemed to me like a guy who doesn’t do straight out lying very well. Which isn’t a bad thing at all, it just means that when he’s asked an uncomfortable question, you can sometimes tell if the answer is something he’d rather not say.

  • Quicksilver ballet

Unsubstantiated rumours don’t make it to MSM like this. Someone’s testing the waters i have to believe. Has someone notified the Fire Department?

  • Quicksilver ballet

For those of you who don’t know anything about Brady, I’ve followed him for a year on Twitter and I think he’s pretty solid. I’m, uh, not generally inclined to think highly of MSM types but Greg is a) bright, b) not really someone who trades in rumour and c) has had at least one big hit in the time I’ve known him – he had a player telling him that the Thrashers were going to move before it was official.

So, take it for what you will. Just keep in mind that everyone denying this story has a pretty strong incentive to do so and Greg’s track record doesn’t indicate that he makes things up.

  • stevezie

I don’t despise Lowe, but I’m curious why his supporters think he could quickly right this ship. If he had any great ideas I’m pretty sure he could get them done right now. It’s not like he isn’t involved.

  • Max Powers - Team HME Evans

Troll alert! Kevin Lowe’s mother has started an ON account! Why she calls herself “Count Grishnack” is anyones guess though.

Ma’am, calling people names is not a great way to gain respect. Also, what Quicksilver Ballet said about grammar and punctuation.

  • Chris.

Maybe Lowe doesn’t agree with Tambellini’s assesment of the backend. It seems a shame to burn another year of the ELC’s on so many good young forwards in an already doomed season.

  • I can’t see Tambi being in trouble yet. This year is critical however, and if by start next season things aren’t tidied up on the roster, then let the lynch mob be formed.

He has a lot of house cleaning to do, a few key veterans to sign, and has to find a home for an old goalie. Also can’t keep Belanger, Horcoff, Gagner, Lander and RNH. Smart move would be to lose a vet.

    • D-Man

I agree – he’s not in trouble – yet… If we haven’t shown any improvement, ie nothing worse than a 26th/27th overall finish – he needs to be replaced…

His biggest priority is to shore up the blueline… When Gagner is healthy, Lander is in OKC – there’s no emergency up front… However, even with a healthy Whitney – we’re still short a bonafide #2/#3 d-man… Barker hasn’t been stellar in the preseason and Gilbert is a #4 at best… That’s where his attention should be…

In regards to finding a home for Khabby – his home is Edmonton for the next two years whether we like it or not… He’s too old that we can’t buy him out and Danis is a plug in OKC… Roy and Bunz won’t be into the mix for at least another two-three years… Khabby will be an expensive caddy for Dubnyk – unless Tambo can find a taker in a trade (which is a pipe dream at best)…

  • Romulus' Apotheosis

    @Archaeologyguy
    thanks and back at you

aside from these rumors… any rumors on Tambi lurking hockey backwaters trying to find that illusive diamond in the rough d-man? it’s been several days since the fedunsmidapocalypse… crickets…?

Well, hey but not all people on twitter are bad,Daren Dregger and BoB mckenzie has twitter and stuff.

I think the league needs to have a twitter media policies were the reports have to have a journalism degree and he have to give out their sources.

  • Mitch

I do feel there is truth to this story because alot can happen in 2 yrs time. S.T. is just getting things on track so I would like to see him get at least 1-2 more yrs. I don’t feel Lowe is a good fit for the G.M’s chair, put way to much value in marginal players at best. Klowe let Pronger go for nothing and I do feel Pronger would have played here until the correct deal was made, all things aside Pronger was a pro.

I dont like how the Penner thing was handled on all aspects.

I do feel Kevin would be a good if not great coach thats what he started as the guy is competitive as hell and I do think there could be something there.

Kevin is a loyal guy a true oiler not a good GM though.

You know since the city of Edmonton, can not seem to see that they need an arena, and it’s citizens would sooner donate there tax money to Northlands, and don’t see the value of the Oiler’s in Edmonton in the first place. Quebec is building an Arena… Kevin Lowe is from Quebec, need I say more? justwondering…
