GDB Wrap Up: Sharks @ Oilers

FML… Final Score: 5-2 San Jose

After Saturday’s loss, how much worse could things possibly get around here? The Nation is in full crisis mode and the only thing we can really do is to wait this thing out and get to the draft. The Oilers had to play better tonight than they did against Calgary (not like they could play worse) and after waiting for two days to get back at it, things didn’t go much better. Oilers against San Jose – what could go wrong?

After an excellent first period, the wheels fell off again. It’s almost as though they go into the intermission and feel too good about themselves. As if letting a bunch of power play goals against isn’t bad enough, Joe Pavelski gets a hat trick and Rexall fans start throwing hats on the ice. To say things aren’t going well would be an understatement. If there was a panic button I’d have pushed it 5 years ago. At least Joe Thornton didn’t get 4 and pull out his schmeckle.

Let’s wrap it up…

The Bright Side

  • Mark Fraser’s flat top
  • David Perron has been a bright side all year
  • No suits were drenched in the making of this loss
  • Mike Brown did not score a hat trick
  • #HereComeTheOilers hash tag was top notch again tonight

The Face Palmers

  • How many times did we have to hear the water bottle story?
  • 2nd periods are the Oilers’ kryptonite
  • Penalty Kill was uhh… off?
  • Highlight of the game was once again the 50/50

  • R U Kidding Me!

After tonight’s game I have come to the conclusion on 4 things:

We definitely do not have a high powered offense no matter how many times analysts and Oiler players say we do.

Our PP is one of if not the worst in the league.

The Calgary Flames are WAY better than us.

Whoever hired the Oiler cheerleaders should be fired.

    • Admiral Ackbar

Those cheerleaders are some attractiveness affirmative action joke. They’re painful to watch. Check their photos on the website, it’s quite a show.

      • mesa

they are supposed to be diversion while oilers are rebuilding. worked for few years but fans start to catch on.next is to hire clowns to do some tricks for couple years.(they have few already)

        • Rick Stroppel

          CLOWN SHOW! CLOWN SHOW!

Yeah, they could have clowns right on the bench. Clown #1 throws a water bottle at the wall and it explodes and drenches Clown #2! Then Clown # 2 makes a funny face and throws a towel at Clown #1! THAT would be funny!

      • Quicksilver ballet

Ha, I thought the same thing about the cheer squad on TSN last night. They also need a rebuild!
Ever check out the girls that push the snow shovels the Stars? WOW.

Management, Players, Coaching, radio announcers, cheer squad, and stadium – all in need of a rebuild.

Geez, this is a tough pill to swallow.

  • bazmagoo

Considering it’s fairly unlikely the team will make the post season in 2014-15, which of the following is the most likely scenario for Lowe getting fired:

1 – Team ties Florida record for most seasons out of the post season at 10 by missing it in 2015-16

2 – Team starts to lose money via attendance as ticket sales continue to drop

    3 – Taylor Hall demands a trade

  • I watch a lot of games on NHL Center Ice so at times I listen to the other team’s play by play announcers when they play the Oilers.

Most play by play guys indicate how easy it is to play against the Oilers, easy to get the puck out and easy to keep the puck in. They also say that the Oilers are out of position a lot!!!

Really hard to listen to (but true) but I learn a lot when not listening to the home play by play guys.

The Oilers are like the bad girlfriend that I just can’t stop loving, even though she’s now overweight and arrogant.

It’s time for a clean break, it’s not me, it’s you.

Absolutely right… I’ve tried several times this year to make a clean break, but always find myself checking this blog & others.
Need to find something else to fill the void… But what?

      • Quicksilver ballet

This is true. To all of those disgruntled oilers fans. Go to a rush game, rexall beers are still 8 dollars but you wont care after 3 of them. Go be loud and watch a team that wins and gives a fudge. The compete level of the edmonton rush, guys who work other jobs and are paid pennies, is so much higher then our 6million/year doll house hockey players its emberresing. go away oilers go rush go bring on the champions cup.

    • paul wodehouse

I used to live 11 time zones away, which is not as bad as you might think for watching the Oilers. Most mornings I would get up at 5 or 6 AM and watch a couple of periods before going to work. I knew they were terrible, I knew they would lose, but I just couldn’t stop.

Now I have moved to 8 time zones away. The games are on at 1 or 2 AM and it is impossible to watch, and I am a happier person.

I just get to work and read about the latest loss in the morning.

I’ve started building my secret underground evil layer. When it’s complete I am going to take control of the worlds frogurt supplies and all will bow to me.

      Bwahahahahaha.

oilers nation should have a poll and ask the Question if to fire the coach now with 9 games left or keep him for next season for the first 10 games and see .and it is a serious request .

    • Rick Stroppel

      EAKINS = ALISON REDFORD

Eakins is clearly dead man walking. Most (maybe all) of the players have tuned him out and do not respect him.

When Redford had her crisis, somebody said “Let’s develop a ‘work plan’ and put her on probation”. Then everyone woke up and said “If she is that bad, let’s just get rid of her”.

So the “experienced associate coach” idea is goofy. If your coach needs training wheels, you need a new coach.

At one time I fovoured giving Eakins 15-20 games next season but now I think that is a mistake. The writing is on the wall. Also, there is no point firing him before the end of this season. They need to do a thorough, professional search and not hire somebody because MacTavish falls in love with him in a meeting.

But I have zero confidence in Lowe and/or MacTavish to make a reasonable HC hire. So the ultimate solution is for Katz to fire Eakins, Lowe and MacTavish about thirty minutes after the last game of the year.

  • Anton CP

Here is one interesting thing about most of Oilers lost, for the last 3 games that Oilers lost when scored first. To start the season with 5 losses were all Oilers scored first.

How many games this year that Oilers have lost after scored first and if it has any indication of Oilers struggle?

  • paul wodehouse

mornin’…see y’all had another one of those nights last night…we put our DVR to real good use these days…we watched The Blacklist, The Following and the second last episode of The Walking Dead last night…now that’s a good evenings’ entertainment without all that Oiler itching and scratching…
had some warm milk and slept like a rock!

EDIT …baggedmilk…the correct spelling for thingies is thingys…I think

  • paul wodehouse

Katz is weird and he is about as shady as they come! It seems to me there was another owner in Edmonton who almost ran the team into the ground as well…PP anyone?

    • BobbyCanuck

At least PP brought us 5 Stanley Cups, which I am beginning to think was a curse

Had we, like a lot of NHL teams, never won the cup, our expectations would be much much lower, therefore we would not be nearly as irritated about the current situation as we are.

Katz Jr. will not have this same problem, by the time he inherits the team, everyone that remembers the glory years will be dead, and expectations will be in alignment with any other team that has not won the cup in 60 years.

To me there is a great flaw in the analysis of the Oilers. Many MSM types repeatedly state that the Oilers are talented offensively. Their rationale for arriving at this conclusion is that they must be because they have drafted 3 forwards first over all.

Unfortunately this analysis is wrong because the Oilers are not a good offensive team. This is confirmed when you look at the Goals For statistics.

They have some offensive talent, but they have no strength or depth at centre and therefore are destined to fail until this is corrected. . Accordingly, the Oilers need to draft a #1 or #2 Centre in order to actually become a talented offensive team.

  • ChillyPepper

Maybe this is the re-make of Major League. I keep waiting for the Oilers DC-3 to come rolling up to the gate and the pilot duct taping the propeller back together. This one however will not have a happy ending. I can see the Oil running the table in reverse.

Ugh…CMD ain’t gonna help he is awesome, yes, but not a generational player like Sid, Lemieux, Gretzky. Our timing in sucking is just bad lol…

      • Quicksilver ballet

Just think of how much potential we could ruin if the oilers manage to grab that kid. with our current track record we could have him ran out of the nhl and playing in the icelandic elite league in, im saying 4 years after draft date.

  • Wow, how this seasoned unravelled to the point the entire organization is under the microscope and looks real bad to the world. Hiring a coach with no NHL experience was bad. Forcing the coach to keep Bucky and Smith – bad again. Evaluating Dubnyk and concluding he’s a starting goalie – soooooo bad. Making no attempt to fix the D which everyone knew was a problem – bad. Gagner’s contract which greatly diminishes his trade value – bad. Employing a chicken-crap heavyweight who wears a face shield and instigates fights – just plain bad. Katz not accepting Lowe’s phoney offer to resign – bad. The very fact the offer was made – pathetically bad. The rediculous letter to the fans – bad and oh so desperate. Censorship of the fans – bad on so many levels. Cheerleaders at the game – embarrassingly bad since this is Edmonton, Alberta, not Japan. Competing, yet again, for another first overall – bad. Jeeze, this list could go on forever. Anyone else want to identify some “bads”?

    • Also the worst radio play by play announcer ever. The guy is just brutal. Also color guy (Debrusk) is getting pretty boring too.
Time to make a complete change in both radio and tv crews. Even Gene Principae is starting to annoy me. His schtik is getting old already. He acts like a clown first and then the real clowns hit the ice.
One new first line centre and at least one really good d-man will go a long way to help this team. Very big challenge for MacT. I just dont know where he goes to get these players as no team wants to give them up. MacT will have to grossly overpay to get anything close to what we need.

  • NsxZero

Went for wings last night at Brewsters instead of going to the game. It’s a good indication that the seasons over when they don’t even bother turning on the in-game audio and rather play music the whole time.

  • Posti

The Oilers should change their name to Slump Busters. Every time someone is having trouble with their game once they play Edmonton they’re back at the top of their game.

  • Doctor Smashy

First off, great thread today (that dutch oven thing? – so random – just what Oiler fans need). Second, perfect gif BM. Glad to hear he lived…

I am in a good mood this morning…I turned the game off at 4-1 because it went more or less as I expected. I am a changed man after reading the wisdom of Dwight Shrute yesterday. No more doing what idiots do for me…the Oilers are bad, but I love ’em. They are my team and there is no sense complaining about how Jeff Petry is not Duncan Keith (pffft…Duncan Keith) and Gagner doesn’t play like a “good player” very much (who cares?) and Hall tries the same move too much (man does that boy try though). A good hockey fan, just like a good parent, loves their players/kids for who they are. Sure I’ll be sad when Gagner moves out but I will be happy with who we rent his locker out to after he is gone…even if it is Kyle Clifford. Just think of the man cave we can build for our new defence corps when our current D move out of their bunk beds and go to college…it will be glorious. I ask you, do Raider fans act like we have been acting the last 8 years? Seriously I am asking because that is a terrible football team and they always seem to be having a good time.

  • S cottV

I hope MacT knows what he’s doing…he knows more about hockey than you or me so maybe I just don’t see it. It better not be the case of MacT just being stubborn but you’d think he’d want to improve the coaching. If he doesn’t want to fire Eakins then bring in somebody to show Eakins the ropes.

From my angle, every single player has regressed this year. You can throw all the fancy stats to say that player X is doing better in this or that but I know what I’m watching in front of me. We sucked the last couple of years too but I see some progress with the young kids at least. Of course the players are at fault for their performance but I think a lot of this has to do with coaching too. It doesn’t seem like the coaching staff knows how to teach or handle the personalities. Seriously, why is Fraser still playing, how many giveaways and errant passes before you sit him out. Eakins seems to have a bigger ego than his players; doesn’t seem to have any composure at all.

I’d entertain the thought of MacT going back behind the bench. So far, I think he’s a better coach than GM.

    • S cottV

At this point – a lose lose for MacT going behind the bench.

Would have to fess up to the Eakins mistake and takes the team headed into a very tough close to the schedule, where they are likely to lose most games anyway.

I think MacT will fess up – in the off season.

Other than a stretch of unreal anomaly goaltending (Scrivens is good but not that good) there is nothing really coming together with how the team is playing.

While a tough group to influence, the Coach must get through to the player group and get things bought into and taking shape. Eakins has had more than enough time and at this point, just about anybody would have to conclude that he is in way over his head. Many of us came to that realization in mid November, when the Oilers were effectively out of the playoffs, due to things like the failed swarm.

The entitled players at the core of the player group, need a coach that they will take very very seriously.

      • #ThereGoesTheOilers

Not saying that MacT should take over as coach this year; just saying that I think he’s a better coach than Eakins. I know the optics of firing the coach looks very bad; so he must find a creative way to help in that department.

  • Bucknuck

    Bright side events last night:

Florida won and are now three points ahead of the Oilers.

There are only nine more games of this forgettable season left to play.

Toronto was eliminated from the postseason.

Pretty sad list, but it’s been a sad year. I am looking forward to training camp so I can feel that thing called hope again.

  • Kr55

Sharks played the night before, no Couture. We get 2 days off to prepare to defend out honour after being embarrassed at home by our oldest rival team. What do we get? 5-2 loss. 42% fenwick close %. And Eakins talking about how great the team was 5 on 5 and just special teams let us down.

I can accept all of it except Eakins trying to drag the Sharks down to our level suggesting we were on an equal footing with them in any way.

  • Aitch

In the world of trading you’re supposed to “Sell High, Buy Low.” Well, for 29 other GMs… this off-season might be the best time to buy Low. Or is that Lowe?
