It’s the night before Christmas, and we’re all on pins and needles about the NHL Entry draft. WHAT is going to happen? I don’t want to spoil the party, but there are some things worth considering.

If Bob McKenzie picks a player to go No. 1 overall, they stay No. 1 overall.

This year?

Aaron Ekblad.

The Oilers may draft an Oil King. It’s possible. Although everyone believes Edmonton has drafted Martin Gernat, David Musil and Kristians Pelss from the OK, the only two players drafted off the junior roster have been Mitchell Moroz and Travis Ewanyk.

The four Oil Kings everyone is talking about are:

  • LW Brett Pollock—breakout season, could go early 2nd round.
  • D Dysin Mayo—Mobile D took a step forward in the second half of the year
  • D Aaron Irving—Smart two-way defender.
  • L Edgars Kulda—A strong season and a dream postseason.

The others we may be talking about Saturday:

  • L Mads Eller—Hard working checker without a lot of offense.
  • L Brandon Baddock—Big body, raw tools
  • D Ashton Sautner—Two-way defender exploded offensively this year.

If the Oilers grab that big center at No. 3 overall, don’t be surprised to see them invest a pick or two in a goaltender. I have no idea who it might be, but Jordan Papirny impressed the heck out of me this spring. There are a few goalies I’ve read about and like — Zachary Nagelvoort, Ville Husso and Ilya Sorokin — but who knows if they’re any good? That’s for the scouts to suss out.

And tomorrow it begins. Christmas in June, and then trades and free agency to be followed by all the beer I can drink on July 1st.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

  • Tikkanese

With all this Leon talk I think you guys are setting yourselves up for dissapointment. Same thing happened with Ryan Murray.

Whoever we take it will cover a need at Center or RD so be happy either way.

  • Tikkanese

I think Ekblad and Reinhart go top two.

Florida either takes Ekblad or trades the pick and Ekblad still goes #1.

Buffalo is pretty strong up the middle already with Ennis, Hodgson, Grigorenko, Girgensons, Conacher etc and Reinhart from many reports will be better suited as a winger in the NHL.

  • misfit

At the end of the day if the Oilers walk away from the first round with any one of Reinhart, Bennett or Draisaitl they will have immeasurably strengthened their club.

We constantly hear the group think opinion that Oilers have great offensive talent. This has not manifested itself to date in any tangible way and, unless we get another key Centre, this talent may never actually deliver on their collective potential. (see 2013-14 GF)

Any one of the top three centres in this years draft have the ability to make the difference for this team. My only worry is that MacT tries to make a trtade that only helps short term.

    Anxiously/Nervously awaiting the draft.

^^^Man, that would be one of my finest efforts if I was doing the whole drama queen thing again.^^^

Can’t say we aren’t due this type of criticism after 8 years.

It’s started ! Vanc. deals Kesler to Anaheim for one of their first round picks , a third rounder and C-Bonino and D– Sbisa . If it’s Anaheims 10th pick then whom might they take at 10 spot ?

  • nuge2drai

Sounds like Vanc. got the 24th pick and not Anaheim’s 10th as per Canuck site . Win for Anaheim if that’s the case . Should free up a Canuck defenceman for trade later on today I suspect with Sbisa on board . Perhaps MacT. can pounce like Tigger on this opening /opportunity ?
