ROUTE 66

September long is here, but the Oilers didn’t give us the rookie TC roster to discuss. Word is it’ll be out next week, and the main list will arrive behind it. Since we have all afternoon to talk Oilers (tomorrow will be devoted to the Eskimos) let’s see how close we can get to the…

TOP 20 PROSPECTS, 2014

And we’re back! It seems like only yesterday (that’s a lie) we gathered together to count down the best prospects in the Oilers system heading into fall. A year ago, the three best prospects were defensemen and six of the top 10 patrolled the blue. A lot has changed in 12 months.

FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION

I’d love to talk to an NHL coach someday about the gift of teenagers forced upon them by general managers. We’re about to see another one, and there’s nothing (apparently) Dallas Eakins can do about it. Who will it impact, beyond the coach? Let’s have a look.

Justin Schultz has Norris potential. He also has a bad contract.

In his press availability announcing the news of the Justin Schultz signing, Edmonton Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish courted controversy by saying that the young defender “has Norris Trophy potential.” He might be right about that. The ironic thing is that if he is, it just makes the terms of Schultz’s new deal even worse.

Schultz contract and analytics

The Oilers signed Justin Schultz to a one-year, $3,675 million deal. Craig MacTavish had very high praise for the 24-year-old from Kelowna. “I think he’s going to be a great player and a great Oiler. I think he has Norris trophy potential,” said MacTavish. Fans have been waiting for “bold” from MacTavish, and there is…

Justin Schultz Signs a 1-Year Deal

This morning, the Oilers announced that they have signed Justin Schultz to a 1-year deal worth $3.675 million.  The contract comes in higher than many of us expected, but it looks like the Oilers paid a higher price for a shorter term. Judging from the reaction on Twitter, the Nation is divided on the new deal.

JUSTIN SCHULTZ: GETTING THE INK DONE

There’s been plenty of debate in recent weeks about how much the Edmonton Oilers should pay RFA defenseman Justin Schultz on a bridge deal. That isn’t likely to end when the ink is done.

NHL Expansion: No Thanks

News broke yesterday that the NHL could be expanding by two teams, possibly as early as 2015. Gary Bettman downplayed the news and said the NHL currently has no plans, which is classic Bettman denial and likely sadly means the reports are probably true.  For the sake of hockey fans, specifically Canadian hockey fans, I hope the…

Andrei Loktionov: Offers apparently on the table, but no decision yet

There aren’t many NHL centres of note still available in free agency. Michal Handzus is out there; Scott Gomez will apparently be going to the New Jersey Devils camp on a tryout basis. The best of this uncertain lot is probably Andrei Loktionov, a 24-year-old veteran of 150-odd NHL games. Apparently he has offers, but hasn’t…

THE EDMONTON OILERS EXPANSION DRAFT PROTECTED LIST

There are rumors all over the hockey world about expansion, and as a certified ‘draft nerd’ I took this opportunity to submit Edmonton’s protected list. These are always tricky, because a bunch of players aren’t eligible and of course free agents don’t need protection. It’s fun all the same, and here’s my list.
