GDB 11.0: MAYBE WE SHOULD MAKE A SACRIFICE

The time has come… The time has come for a victory!  In the very least, please do not embarrass yourselves on national television. I repeat, this game will be televised across the country. Let’s try to show up on time.

One of the crazier parts of the schedule is that the Oilers and Canucks play each other 4 times in the first 2 months of the season.  If the Oilers are going to gain any ground on playoff teams, they have to find a way to win some points in these next two games.  The Canucks are a beatable team, and the Oilers have played them well in the first 2 games of the season.  They didn’t win, but they also couldn’t buy a goal. Let’s hope that changes tonight.

Alex Burrows starts his 3 game suspension tonight after his late hit on Alexei Emelin. So far this season, Burrows has 2 goals and 4 assists in 10 games, and the Canucks will surely miss the offence he’s capable of providing.  How big of an advantage is it to the Oilers that he’s not playing? I guess it depends.  Their offence will take a hit but their face punching ratio also rises dramatically.  It will certainly matter if Tom Sestito, who draws in for Burrows, has free reign on running the Oilers tonight. Not that that would ever happen of course.

QUICK HITS…

  • Coming in to tonight’s game, Ryan Miller is 9-0 against the Oilers in his career.
  • Both Gazdic and Fasth have been cleared to play. Gazdic was sent to OKC on a conditioning stint, and it will be interesting to see who he would be replacing if/when he draws back into the lineup.
  • Nikita Nikitin is still having issues and Brad Hunt stays in the lineup… I guess.
  • To this point, all three of Hall, Nuge, and Eberle have been held off the scoresheet against Vancouver.  They’ll have to get something going to say the least.
  • Jeanshorts and I were talking about David Perron yesterday and we noticed that he doesn’t seem to be mixing it up as much as he was last year.  Aside from a few face washes, he hasn’t really been causing mayhem like we’ve come to expect.  Can’t help but wonder if he’s feeling off?
  • And now for a fight by two guys that no longer play for either team. I miss you, Sam.
  • Feel free to vent all your Canucks related hated at Canucks Army. They have no friends, and could use the human interaction.

TONIGHT…

Sedins

GAME DAY PREDICTION: The Oilers finally solve the Ryan Miller Conundrum®, putting his lifetime record against the Oilers to a paltry 9-1 *wanking motion* – JS

The wagon line gets a heaping dose of the Sedins, and shut them down effectively. The Oilers get their first win against the West by beating the Canucks 3-1. -bm

OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: It’s a rough and tumble game, featuring a lot of big hits, and a lot of Canucks acting tough after a linesman has stepped in between them and an Oiler. – JS

With Alex Burrows being suspended 100% of the Oilers go unbitten, and without the need for a tetanus shot. -bm

NOT-SO-OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: With Alex Burrows suspended responsibility to throw all of the teams cheap shots will fall onto the zit filled shoulders of Zack Kassian, who, becoming flustered by the entire thing, will eventually resort to helicoptering his stick over his head any time he’s on the ice. – JS

After taking an afternoon nap, Zack Kassian was able to colour within the lines of his favourite colouring book.  It was a Power Rangers colouring book that he got for his 4th birthday. He promised himself that he would finish one whole page by his birthday each year. Unfortunately, he’s stuck on a close up of the red Power Ranger, Jason. -bm

Hunt is a good shot. That’s about it. MAB at best. His shot is a beauty and he’s good on the pp. I think it’s time for Oscar, he’s a much better option.

What kind of System cannot produce simple give and gos??

There have been to tactical gifts but simply using a basic play would have helped tonight.

Might as well go back to the slappers if you cannot execute give and gos.

  • Admiral Ackbar

Greenlight the defense to be the first part of the give and go by bootlegging it up-ice,then passing cross-ice from up high and finishing it off backdoor from 20 feet out with a redirection.

      • a lg dubl dubl

There was a lot of System stuff wrapped up in the give-and-go suggestion,it wasnt simply a shot in the dark.It kinda went hand in hand with stopping the surrendering of possesion in the o-zone to low % slap-shots in the 1st period, you know it all kinda ties in with being a “Possesion” Team.

There were better things to do with those o-zone possesions the Oilers WERE generating with excellent n-zone transitions. They just couldnt dial in a new n-zone transition tactic they needed to adjust to to support something more controlled than the quick slappers from up high. They came in planning to use the slappers like they were, but had no reliable alternative worked out.

They needed to use lateral wide and strong controlled speed o-zone entrys, and also high speed give and gos mixed into this focus.”Possesion” tactics, supported by high defensive support hovering right on the blueline wristing pucks immediatly back into the fray or driving in to finish off give and gos from the half-wall.

But what the Coaches were doing tonight was not the “Possesion” style,it flew in the face of reason and considering the importance of the game bordered on dereliction.

Blueline Slappers then a peripheral one-and-done half-arsed 2-man rush then a Dump-and-Chase series of o-zone tactics do NOT support the “Possesion” game.

This was not a near miss, the Coaches drove this sucker right off the cliff.

The Morale and Body-language and talkativity was alarmingly low-key and depressed.

There were tons of details the Coaches should have noticed and adjusted very early on.

Tonight an effective simple free-style give-and-go executed for 60 minutes consistantly would have been a life-line to the Oilers.

  • Serious Gord

Miller really looks to have regained his form as one of the finest goaltending craftsmen in the world – perfect rebound control, excellent awareness nice to see.
And such a counterpoint to Scrivens.

  • Admiral Ackbar

I’m completely disgusted with the level of fight along the boards by Justin Schultz.

He has absolutely no heart. No defensive acumen. No cohones. Sadly, the Canucks, my most hated team, eat players like this alive.

  • Andresito

Chalk up another loss to the West. 3 straight to Vancouver. Some observations… Yakupov looked lost out there on the top line, Hunt is an AHL d-man. Does the GM not see this? Every tier 1 and Tier 2 fan can see it. Scrivens cost them another game. Terrible rebounds and give aways. Arcobello experiment should
be over soon hes an AHL player. Can you seriously not find an average 2 or 3 centre MacT? These experiments you do simply dont work. Give it up. Also.. if Hall is out for awhile you can wave bye bye to another season. With him out they are a different team. –

    Frustrated fan for 8 years.

  • Admiral Ackbar

I gotta say, I’ve been willing to give Hunt a fair shake, but if Nikitin is really hurt, you gotta call up someone who can play D. It’s not like Hunt has given us any offense so far.

We look really defeated that whole 3rd period.

  • Well it looks like another Squirrel Egg was laid by the Coaching staff. We are back to the “almost there” stage.

This game was there for the taking for most of the night, but it didnt happen, again.

With no dynamic breakdown provided gratis,I guess the Oilers Coaches and Dellows have a lot of work to do again because this loss looked a lot like the last one. What is missing? Why couldnt the Oilers generate any offense with so many Possesions?

This was game 2 of the 5 game penalty to Eakins for pushing the stats,3 more games/losses to go before any dynamic analysis is given. No worries then because 5 game win streaks arent so hard to produce if you know how to do it.

The devil is in the details. The Oilers could have again made just a few small FIRST PERIOD adjustments to their n-zone transitions and o-zone entrys and shooting protocal and they could have put the Nucks away early. This was another “anybodys Game” and those are the ones competative teams win.

The dump-and-chase at the end was the epitome of idiocy.

    • Cain

Please tell me you’re just high…otherwise, the amount of therapy needed based on just this comment ALONE would seem insurmountable. Sooooo, you’re just really high, right?

  • Soiled Trousers

Even with a another good effort , we still do not look good enough to defeat teams in the West . MacT. made small strides on bottom of defence and bottom lines on offence . but has done nothing of consequence when it comes to top defensemen (2) or top centermen (2) . Draisaitl and Arco are not the answer to better results , certainly not this year . Not much Eakins can do with a squad so full of holes to begin with . Scrivens is looking more and more like a backup goalie at best and his consistency is very questionable . 9 years now , and you wonder when the real rebuild will start ? Club is not very entertaining compared to our Eskimos .

  • Soiled Trousers

My hats off to Scrivens a on the mental health issue. He cost them the game and only he can prove himself to be a starter.Personaly I think he is a dud but I do nominate new age sys as the limp dick spokesman of the NHL.

  • Serious Gord

Gotta hope the NHL stays consistent and tough against the direct head shots like the Ferrance hit tonight. Never good to see someone suspended, but hopefully the players will ease up like that early “hit” on Hall by Bieksa.

    • a lg dubl dubl

You can tell all that just from reading gameposts? Maybe the Oilers could use your talents,do you come with a Crystal Ball or do you HAVE Crystal Balls? Either way you would fit into the Oilers current Group judging by tonights results.

  • Soiled Trousers

So your top forward is cleaved.

One of your regular defencemen will be suspended.

And your starting goalie is looking like every other cr@ppy goalie the Oilers have started the past 8 years.

I predict great comedy is about to ensure on these boards.
