It’s that time of year again! That time when the Oilers sell off actual human beings for wishes and magic beans. How many beans are coming our way? We’ll be staring at Twitter with calculators in hand to find out those answers. Jeanshorts  and I will keep this thing updated throughout the day with everything that happens for the Oilers and around the NHL. This is the OilersNation trade deadline live blog!

Last year’s trade deadline happened to be my first day of working at OilersNation full time. Last year, we said goodbye to longtime Oiler, Ales Hemsky. This year, Jeff Petry is the one that’s leaving town. Frankly, the fact that the Oilers are in a sellers position at the deadline yet again is infinitely disappointing – I thought we were supposed to be past trading veterans for wishes? *laughs maniacally* First Perron (for Klinkhammer, I know) got moved, and Petry was the next in line.

To me, trading guys like Perron and Petry seems like a step backwards. Are we on our way out of this rebuild, or are we starting this thing over again (the latter seems to be true)? Is Klinkhammer a useful hockey player? Absolutely, but he’s not David Perron. Is Petry a number one? No, he’s not, but he’s a solid hockey player with some experience that the Oilers won’t have passed today. Sure, maybe the picks that came for him might pan out, but when? Five years from now? Seems like we’re going in the wrong direction here.

I don’t expect the Oilers to be very busy today, but we’re going to be staring at Twitter all day just to be sure.

As we’ve been talking about for weeks, it seems like Jeff Petry was only a few draft picks away from leaving town. Personally, I think moving a guy like Petry is ridiculous, but what other options are there? When MacT signed Petry to a one-year deal, last summer, it all but guaranteed the result that happened this morning. Is Petry the anchor on the backend that the Oilers have been looking for for so long? Of course not, but the Oilers had to use him like he was that guy. Playing Jeff Petry above his weight class was the Oilers fault, not his. Anyway… the Oilers have traded Jeff Petry to Montreal for a second and third round (only if the Habs win two playoff series) pick in 2015.

Yesterday morning, Darren Dreger tried his best to break the Oilogosphere when he reported that teams were asking the Oilers what it would take to get Andrew Ference. Mentioning the captain’s name in trade rumour was a surprise since we hadn’t heard anything prior. Ference carries a heavy contract for a player of his skill set and also holds a no move clause.

Draft Picks:

As it stands right now, the Oilers have two first round picks to play with (well… one actually, they’re not touching our scratch ticket) that might be useful in packaging for better players. Personally, I think any trade using draft picks will likely get made at the draft, but who knows – this is the Oilers we’re talking about.

Anyone else?

I don’t think we’re going to see a big trade from the Oilers, but you never know. As for the UFAs, you have guys like Viktor Fasth, Richard Bachman, and Steve Pinizzotto representing what’s left for the Oilers. Maybe Fasth could have been moved (big maybe) had he been healthy, but that’s not an option so I imagine they’ll lose him for nothing in the summer.

I will be updating this thread as the day goes on (if anything happens) so keep your eyes on the Nation for your updates…

  • 7:10am – Jeff Petry to Montreal for a second round pick and a conditional fifth round pick (if the Habs can win two rounds this pick turns into a third).
  • 9:20(ish)am – Ryan Rishaug says that he thinks the Oilers are done for the day on the Nielson and Fraser Show
  • 10:38am – I’m going to need more coffee. This is going to be a long day…
  • 11:35am – I’m starting to think the Oilers aren’t going to do anything fun. The MacT presser will be on around 1:30pm, so I’ll live tweet that. Hopefully that will be entertaining, at least.
  • 12:58pm – Looks like the Oilers are done, pending a deal that comes in after the deadline… Underwhelming day for the Oilers even though I wasn’t expecting much from them in the first place.

MacT Presser Updates…

…I’m not sure ’bout that … Petry couldn’t pack his bag fast enough to get out of that

camdog …been trying to include your reply button to say… but can’t seem to get the Post Comment button to work and actually post …here’s what I say but your take should be at the top from your comment #45

…and see THAT’S what I mean …that guy walked in and strutted out his huge stupid ego and took down all the glory days stuff and declared this and that and the other thing and fully pooped the bed …I’m NEVER going to use that guys name again on here and imo I think there should be a ban of the very THOUGHT of his name or the fact that he was ever the coach … whether it’s on MacT or Kevin or the smurf owner!

… the guys DEAD to me !

…best part of the day is when they trotted out two live lamas onto the TSN set after Duthie said things weren’t so slow that they’d resort to cheap thrill visuals…ala CNN

IMO coyotes will ice their starting 1st line next season with Domi, Duclair and McDavid …

    can you spell chemistry?

I seriously doubt the Oilers will do anything else so another deadline has come and gone. And once again the Fans around the Oilers nation woke up early this morning to see that Jeff Petry had been traded away for nothing. Making a lot of us feel like that guy that brought home the hot chick from the bar. Nailed her all night and woke up the next morning and found out she was a man. Such a disappointing team to follow.

The Oilers are like a bad spouse…when they’re good we love them and nothing could be more perfect. Slowly, however the good times become fewer and we are stuck in an abusive relationship where the emotional abuse is nearly constant. Like the cheating wife or husband they promise it will get better but it never does.

If this was your spouse you’d long ago have kicked them to the curb, but it’s your team, to whom you’ve been loyal too for longer than any other relationship that you’ve had so we bemoan management, chide the underachievers and wait for the day they get it right so things can be good again, if only for a little while.

Ahh, the life of an Oilers fan…..where are my clubs?

Can we hope that this is the only thing MacT was allowed to do today as Nicholson is keeping a close eye on everything? Getting ready to clean the house that should be cleaned – upstairs!

…with Buff and Arizona doing these magnificent tankings oilers are gonna be outta the bottom 5 in no time …maybe we need to play the rest of the season 6on5 and just live with the empty netters!

Thanks for all your work today BM. As fans we get caught up in the craziness that is Oiler management and we forget to thank the people that deliver the content to us in an entertaining way. Thank you for all that you do!
