We did it! I can’t believe the Oilers won the lottery! McDavid is coming to Edmonton!… probably.

More to come.

  • Ever the Optimist

Absolutely embarrassing that the Oilers are picking 1st overall again, rewarding the inept and most poorly ran organization in pro sports. Oilers brass and fans shouldn’t be cheering, any professional organization with a winning mentality would be ashamed

  • Ever the Optimist

I don’t understand why everyone is hoping McDavid does a Lindros? Does no one remember Lindros never won a cup and his career was cut short due to injury, but the trades made from Lindros cemented the Nordiques / Avalanche as one of the best teams for like a decade?

    • Serious Gord

Whether your team wins a cup is as close to irrelevant to assessing the greatness of a player as you can get. An awful lot of great players have never won one.

      • Have to take a hard disagree there Gord, especially in this context. Sure Lindros was a great player, but he never lead his team to a cup, and therefore, the Nordiques / Avalanche got the better deal there.

Also, Bo Jackson was a hell of an athlete, still never considered one of the greatest players of either sport purely because no championship.

Injured players, as good as they are, can never become true greats without winning championships. Not my opinion, just how they will be remembered in history.

        • Serious Gord

Assessing players based on a team award like winning a cup is a poor metric.

          Some notable greats:

          Marcel Dionne
          Gilbert Perrault
          Mark Howe
          Pat LaFountaine
And a whole lot of other hall of famers.

          • Jordan McNugent-Hallkins

Again, gonna swing it back tot he context of the conversation:

Buffalo fans: I hope he refuses to sign just like Lindros.

Me: That’s a weird thing to hope for considering that only made that team waaaay better.

What you are saying, I do partially agree with. As I think Smyth is one of the greatest, maybe even thee greatest Oiler ever. But, he will not be remembered in the same breaths as Gretzy, Messier, ect. And that’s also how it goes with players whose careers get cut short to injury. Instead, everyone says, “oh, what a shame. I wonder what might have been.” And I really don’t think that’s my opinion, I think that’s how it is. But, I might be wrong, no big deal.

  • With Hopkins and McDavid centering top 2 lines , will Oilers move Draisaitl to wing , or use him for 3rd center ? Lander , Roy and Gordon create an overload at center seemingly . Nurse , on defence , will probably crack opening roster as well . Craig’s job just got a whole lot easier going into next season , with a couple of glaring holes maybe shored up . .

This came from the hockey gods, and not the hockey brains of Edmonton.

    • Joy S. Lee

We’re not cheering out of accomplishment, we’re just happy to have some hope. If that makes us all losers – as opposed to you presumably being some kind of winner – then we will have to make the logical assumption that you are a winner with no hope, and I’m not really sure which is worse. By the way, you’ve got a great name, for a winner…

  • Rob...

Before the season started there was a photo contest where one of the entries showed the Oilers Management plan involved just one thing… drafting McJesus. I think it showed one of the Oilers brass holding an Oilers McDavid jersey.

Dude, whatever your name is, you’re a time travelling wizardgod amongst men. Major props to you, Sir.

  • Andy7190

I’m usually pretty negative on ON and don’t have a lot of faith in Oiler’s management but screw you guys who say we don’t deserve McDavid, you self loathing pukes. After putting up with the past bunch of years the FANS absolutely deserve this player….in the words of the great Ice Cube “today was a good day”

  • Butters

Of the 2 first overall malcontents…

Lindros never won a cup and may never be in the hall of fame.

Mario went to Pittsburgh, won two cups and now is an owner of the team.

The morale of the story, go to where your picked and be happy about it. I am going to bet McDavid knows that too.

    • Dwayne Roloson 35

You are correct….but make no mistake when the kid’s EL is done in 3 years he is gonzo….enjoy the next 3 years of ineptness…then when McDavid is gone…the Oiler gong show continues….it’s a sad situation really….

  • YeahHeDid

    Pouliot Nuge Eberle

    Hall McDavid Yak

    ? Roy Lander/Drai

    Hendricks Gordon Klink

If the Oilers can sign a full of use free agent to play on the wing on the 3rd line, that can move up when need be. I can see that core doing good with a good useful 13th- forward.

The defense and goalie is where the free money should be spent, and/or a future picks trade. Two buyouts, two solid defense sign and/or trade, and a goalie upgrade would make them decent.

    ? Klefbom

    ? Fayne

    Maricin Schultz

The Oilers were never going to sign a bunch of free agents, ever, to become a competitor. Everyone knows this and history will speak for it self. They had to built for years to the draft, and now the last piece to the draft plan is here.

The future is bright, and I know MacT and Lowe have the Oilers best interest at heart.

They have/had a plan that is going to come together as they see fit. They have/had the OK from Katz to do so, regardless of what Flames, Canucks and Leaves fans, MSM, and other bitter GMS and executives say. They all need to get a fork and a knife and eat a d!ck. The Oilers fans need to relax and understand that if you want ball-you got to fall to rise.

I assume the high traffic of comments on this site with negativity and whining is the use to be Oilers fans that left for what they confused as better hope with the Flames and Canucks.

In due time the Oilers will be like the Wu-Tang of the 90’s; nothing to #*@$ with!

  • Wow…

To think I was fine with Strome..

Feels a little dirty but who wouldn’t take this??

Buffalo is acting like this wasn’t a lottery and actually got screwed!!

    Meanwhile, ARZ actually got screwed!!

Those poor desert bastards!! They really can’t catch a break…

  • Zamboni Driver

My favourite is the everyone saying that all the ‘core pieces’ are even more untouchable.

you’re going to need to give your heads a collective shake, fanboys. There is zero chance that your 3 C are McDavid, RNH and Drai. None. Who is going to check anyone? McDavid won’t be asked to…RNH weighs 140 lbs, think the german is going to want to be a checker??! C’mon.

This team still goes nowhere with this D core and goal-tending.

You think other GMs are going to be GENEROUS now in moving pieces to the Oilers (who have done absolutely nothing to deserve…anything)?! No chance.

The chances of the holy trinity + Yak being on this team next year are…or actually should be zero.

    • nuge2drai

Earlier today I suggested if the Oil got MacD, then LD could be moved to fill some holes. It was thoroughly trashed. Still think this makes a lot of sense.

      • Zamboni Driver

People have watched the Oilers (and probably counted a bunch of nonsense) way too much.

They really need to watch the playoffs.

Not only is this Oilers group (including the holy 3) third last in the league, they would get completely obliterated 8-0 in a four game sweep in any playoff series. And the ‘young talent, sick hands’™ would all be in the hospital…

well, not Eberle, because…well you know – ‘tough areas’.

We also think people are going to take the Oilers garbage and give us Drew Doughty.

    • Retsinnab5

You remind of a woman in a poor abusive relationship.

If you are so wronged-why are you still here?

Help yourself and leave, you can do it!

Don’t think of yourself as you think of your abuser, you’re better than that. Right?

You don’t appear to be beating a dead horse in hopes. Do you?

Are all the kettles black? Or do you have bright pot?

      • Zamboni Driver

As opposed to those women in the ‘good’ abusive relationships, I guess?

Not sure how one would ‘beat a dead horse in hopes’. But I’m going to suggest….no. That doesn’t sound like me either.

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you’re 11 years old and we’re still working on our big boy words.

you’re doing fine. Keep it up.

    • nuge2drai

Oilers could trade the pens pick, montreals second, montreals third and the St.louis third for a decent top 4 Defenseman.

Again we have the cap space. Like to see Anderson or Lehner get traded to the Oil. The Sens will be unloading one of those Goalies for cheap.

    • Zarny

This is what teams who rebuild through the draft do. They have a few years of top end talent.

Pens: Malkin, Fluery, Letang, Crosby, Staal.

Chicago: Toews, Kane, Buflygn, Crawford, Saad, Seasbrook, Keith.

It won’t be tough to keep Hall, Nuge, Ebs, Yak, Drai, and McDavid together for the next 3 years. That collective cap hit is just slightly over 20 mill.

So go suck on some lemons somewhere else.

  • nuge2drai

    I know it’s a bit early but here goes…

    Pouliot Hopkins Eberle

    Hall McDavid Draisaitl

    Purcell Roy Yakupov

    Hendricks Gordon Klinkhammer

Spend the cap on DEFENSE. Trade the pens pick for DEFENSE. Oilers have a ton of cap space and pretty much a full forward roster.

  • Retsinnab5

The best was the look on McDavid’s face when he found out the Coilers won the draw…he looked like he was gonna cry and could barely muster a sentence when Strombo interviewed him, he was clearly rattled/unhappy yet did the best he could to save face and put on a smile while the cameras were rolling

    • Well, Lander is already signed, I doubt he clears waivers a second time. So he will play. Also, Gordon can’t live forever. Eventually the team will need a cheaper option for that fourth line centre. I could see Lander taking that over maybe.

As for Roy, I think at least the fan consensus is that the Brass resigns him at least for one more year. I doubt he takes that deal and likely finds something else. But it would be great if for once, even a player like McDavid started down the depth chart, and wasn’t immediately counted on to Carry the whole damn team. Also, if you were the opposition, which of these lines do you defend (in no particular order):
      Pouliot, Nuge, Ebs

      Purcell, Roy, Yak

      Hall, McDavid, Lander

If Nelson just rolled those lines, it would be pretty tough for teams to keep pace.

    • Zarny

You want so badly to see Oilers’ management publicly shamed. It’s not healthy.

It doesn’t matter what happened with Lindros or Messier or Larmer or anyone. Holdouts are individual situations based on specific circumstances. All that matters is what McDavid will do.

McDavid has stated on several occasions he’ll go wherever he’s drafted. He said the best advice his father gave him was not to be “that guy” when there were rumors he wouldn’t go to Erie.

McDavid isn’t Lindros. In fact, he’s conscious of specifically not being Lindros. He’s not going to hold-out.

    • BlazingSaitls

Only you would find a way to take a dump in the middle of a room of happy people who just won the lottery.

Your distain for positivity is unhealthy man. Can’t you just party for 1 night? The Oilers just won Connor McDavid.

    • Do you want McDavid to hold out?

Everyone here knows that oil mgt is inept(to say the least). Everyone here knows that it sucks for McDavid.

But any true oiler fan would be ecstatic REGARDLESS.

      You mad bro?
