GDB 12.0 Wrap Up: Dr. Drai

ATB Sponsor Banner

Heyoooooooo, Alberta!

It’s Cat Silverman here, reporting as your emergency call-up game day recapper. I’m taking time out of my Halloween here to give you expert(ish) analysis on the Battle of Alberta tonight, since our lovely friends over at Oilers Nation are busy making sure that the streets of Edmonton are filled with giant Eberle faces. Glad to be back!

Since the first Battle of Alberta was a barn-burner in Calgary (and by barn-burner, I mean Edmonton burned down Calgary’s barn by making absolute fools out of the host club), it’s only fitting that their second meeting of the season was just as…. uh, fun.

Edmonton went down nice and early, then stormed back. Then they went down again, then they came back, then…

Yeah, the Oilers lost.

The Bright Side

Leon Draisaitl. Holy smokes, that kid can play.

Some of you may know me as the girl that once (meaning Thursday) jokingly suggested that the Oilers trade Leon Draisaitl to the Arizona Coyotes, using the logic that Edmonton loves to give Arizona really good German hockey talent before they’re fully developed.

Honestly, I said that because I’m so excited about how Dr. Drai plays and I’m greedy. I want him here in Arizona so I can see him while I’m busy squandering my life away in the sweltering desert.

Last year, Draisaitl got off to the kind of slow start that would have had more hasty GMs dealing him for a blue line asset this summer, but the Oilers held on to him – and is it ever paying off. He’s already had two multi-point games this season – and he’s only played in two games so far. He was one of the most offensively dominant players all night, and that’s not an exaggeration. I think it says a lot about what the Oilers have that I could see Dr. Drai only getting better from here; all the hype has been around the arrival of Connor McDavid this year (and rightfully so), but let’s not forget that last year’s third overall pick is reportedly heralded as the next Joe Thornton.

Of course, it would have been even more beautiful if Sam Bennett had been less than impressive, but he had a pretty decent game himself. The 19 year old fourth overall selection, who was the source of a few too many debates in the time following the 2014 draft, got himself a primary assist and didn’t look too invisible.

The Face Palmers

Look, ON. I’m a goalie, so I’m usually the first person to point out when a play normally blamed on the goalie should have actually been blamed on the defense – but my God, Cam. That’s on you, bud.

The biggest difference between this year’s ‘bad goals’ and last year’s, though, is how Talbot reacts to them. Last year, the team’s defense and Scrivens almost fed off one another in this downward spiral of cringeworthy suck; this year, things are mostly held together.

That being said, the defense still needs a lot of work. Michael Frolik is an awesome player – I laughed at Winnipeg this summer when they let him go – but seriously, he has no business getting a hat trick against Edmonton with Cam Talbot in net and four goals for the Oilers in the process.

We knew that Calgary was desperate to win, and Edmonton underestimated what that meant for the team that’s looked like steaming trash so far. Draisaitl, Hall, and the Nuge looked super, but there’s still a lot about the Oilers that needs to be improved upon.

Eberle’s Halloween from ATB Financial

Who went out tonight dressed as Eberle? The answer should be all of you – but if you didn’t, here’s a message from Eberle himself (via the computer. It’s the same as him talking to you in person, I swear).

Thanks for having me, folks! Hope I didn’t offended your senses too much. Always happy to be OilersNation’s favorite emergency call-up.

“Good teams have to overcome bad officiating” – MacT

“Good teams have to overcome bad officiating, unless you’re against the Oilers. Then you’ll get the calls every time.” – Gary Bettman

  • Our defense’s new nickname? The Great Pacific Garbage Patch!!! With Ference at the heart of it!! Davidson is a keeper though. I’m just hoping Chiarpete finds a defensemen. We need all the help we can get.

  • Robert (AKA Hockey Fan)

When the last line of defense lets the team down at the worst possible time…..and of top of that at least fought back from a game they got outplayed in….sucks no other way to say it.

Ference. … Won’t waive his no trade clause to allow the oilers to move him down to Ahl…. he’s a real winner.

Can’t believe Mac-t gave this guy a ntc in the first place….. 6th defenseman in Boston getting dumped for an Ahl fill in…some how gets overpaid and a ntc.

      Think: corny sitcom music.

      “That’s just Oilers!”

Picture Katz with hands on hips scolding his child.

“Awwwww…. MacT. What babe you done now?”

      That’s just Oilers!

  • Serious Gord

They didn’t quit. They came back. The defense is still terrible but not as bad as it has been in the past. Bad goal(s) some missed tip ins and the oil lose.

But the flames played well last night – much better than before Brodie got back. They were playing better and more desperately. (Though I think the coach is getting exposed on some of his tactics). They got the luck and this the win. Let’s see what they make of it going forward.

On the whole definitely more entertaining this year than last and that’s a good thing.

  • MontanaMan

The game itself was great. The outcome was not unfortunately. If the game had gone our way all these comments would be different.

Talk about players supporting each other on the ice but fans not willing to support players. Suck it up buttercups. Practice what you preach – or are you just going to give up? It’s a loss, move on, get better.

Now 4 wins out of 12 games for the Oilers.

Tonight was a great Halloween Dress up evening for the fans. The Oilers were also well dressed for the Game.Unfortunately there are NO Points given in the NHL for best appearance!

For the next Oiler HOME Game — Will the patient Oiler fans receive PAPER BAGS to dress and appear well dressed?

Calgary are near the bottom. Are the Oilers in the same predicament?
    Another BAGGED SEASON?

  • Gooilgo

Me thinks some bad coaching tonight, can’t believe the ice time for some like Ferrence etc.

Our defense sucks and doesn’t look like they intend to do much to fix it and until they do flames will take the wins.

    • Dwayne Roloson 35

Ference played 14 minutes which was 3rd pairing time. How’s that bad coaching?

Of course they want to fix the defence but they’ve been on the job for 6 months. Be realistic.

  • Robert (AKA Hockey Fan)

Pouliot – selfish penalty as usual.
Talbot – anyone nervous re-signing him?
    Ference – God help us.
    Yakupov – Mr. Offside Extraordinaire.
1st period – Hey let’s spot the other team 3 goals.
Davidson – that big shot is a sight for sore eyes.
    Purcell – I didn’t curse him tonight.
Coach’s Challenge – go fook yourself.

  • This was not a crisp game by Edmonton. D was sloppy too many times making poor plays and brutal first passes. Can someone please sharpen Ference’s skates before the game he seems like he’s on a slip and slide rather than skates.

II thought the goalie interference was weak and nice to see the HNIC crew agree. That play did not impede his ability to make the save the screen set in front of the net did.

Talbot and .844 SAV – it’s like goalies out from the Oilers grave came out to haunt Cam in this one – Scrivens on the play behind the net and that was a classic Duby on winner.

Can’t let too many points like these get away.

    Power Plays 1/3 2/4
    Hits 31 19
    Faceoff Wins 26 40
    Giveaways 9 17
    Takeaways 6 5
    Blocked Shots 17 7
    Penalty Minutes 10 8

The giveaways are once again killing us. They need to improve that. Also getting outhit doesn’t help.

I’m annoyed but not at the same time. I have to keep remembering that this season is not going to be world beating and it’s a case of slowly turning the titanic of losing Oiler seasons around, there are gonna be shockers like this game.

Good thing was the Oil seem to have offence and when it clicks it’s magic. Bad thing is still defensive work which is going to be a work in progress. The slightly concerning part is awkward goals going in.

Don’t think Talbot had a lot of work tonight but he had a shocker, 5 goals in 32 shots is not so good and fair enough if they were quality goals, but 2 were baffling and the last one is especially hard to take as the team had great fightback.

Hope Talbot gets someone to fire loads of puck against him from bad angles as teams are going to be shooting from everywhere now.

Think the better team lost, but at least for the neutrals they got a good game to watch.

  • S cottV

Hoping it’s a little easier these days, to suggest around ON that maybe we need big Drai to play in the NHL.

That big reach is needed in the Oilers top 6, even with Eberle in the lineup.

Drai looked like he got some sleep last night.

  • Serious Gord

When are the bloody excuses going to end? Calgary is an awful team but we are even worse. Chiarelli has really shored up our defence and goaltending situation. Has the bloody third or fourth line scored a meaningful goal this year?

  • Chainsawz

    1. I don’t why Ference had a second of ice time after the second period. I knew he had lost something, but wow, it was on display tonight.

    2. Goaltending – hammer meet head. Did we use up some sort of voodoo in ’06 with Roloson? Just my take, I don’t see Talbot as a long term solution and am relieved he isn’t signed past this season.

    • Serious Gord

Actually, Ference has played pretty well recently, with good, short accurate passes and a decent shot. His partner, unfortunately, can’t move the puck to save his life and that doesn’t help.

As well, Defensive Zone play is a 5 man game; there was crap support for the D including Ference; some of the forwards are so weak on the boards and poor at positioning it’s sickening. Good luck moving the puck out; this is largely dependent on the tenacity, skill and H-IQ of the forwards the D are playing with. Brutal.

      Talbot will be fine…

  • MacT's Neglected Helmet

That was a really odd game. A really fun game to watch. A heartbreaking game. Such an odd game.

Cam Talbot was awful. Hope he bounces back. I think he will. We need him to.
Our top 2 lines are fantastic. It’s so much fun to watch. Opponents are scared. Our bottom 2 lines, and most of our defence (I’d say everyone minus Sekera, Davidson, and Nurse), is frightening. I’m scared.

    • MacT's Neglected Helmet

Pylons don’t score 4 goals (5 goals actually). The Oilers D and especially Goaltending were BAD tonight, but there was nothing wrong with the offence.

      • MacT's Neglected Helmet

isn’t that the same every game you guys have played for 9 years??

It was a good game! Lots of oiler trolls on FN tonight, so I thought I’d swing over

  • 5 Cups

Tmac should own up to his decision to play Ference over Fayne. Fayne on his worst night has never been as bad as Ference. Even the 7 dman rotation would of given TMAC a chance to bench Ference. In the end he had to play him as little as possible and at least two goals went in the net. It should of been 3 if it wasn’t for Gryba.

Every goalie has a bad game or two. Every Oiler goalie in the last 9 years has had these nights. Talbot is legit in my mind. It’s this swiss cheeze defence. We have to expect this every once in awhile until the defence improves. Goalies eventually crap the bed under pressure of always having to be perfect.

From this point forward you got Sekera, Nurse, Davidson, Klefbom, Gryba, Fayne. Schultz, Reinhardt also if they returns. Ference is sent a check, and is told thanks for his contribution to the city and the team. Frankly because this defence is so bad, just dress 7 every night. Go to 6 if a guy is lost, cause every game they have one or two dman not in the game and it’s killing them. Tonight Sekera, Ference, and Gryba were lost. I give a pass to Gryba cause he is being asked to anchor a third pair with a rotating door of partners. Sekera will come around. He is a number 3/4, expected to be a number 1.

Lander needs to see bench. He was ok, but he needs to show something.

Lastly, the Flames are a terrible team so far. We were so much better talent wise in our top 6. It was amazing to see the discrepancy in high end offensive talent. We had no business loosing. Tmac is a good coach, but Grybence was the catalyst for defeat. Neither can move a puck, and Ference can’t defend they mistakes he makes. The move was indefensible. I am so frustrated by this organization dressing Andrew.

  • Serious Gord

Heartbreaker Hall. Great goal, great setups for goals…now if only he would stop turning the puck over 2-3 times a shift. Talbot…please don’t do that ever again! You guys are killing me.
