GDB 66.0 Wrap Up: Oilers @ Flyers

As Chris the Intern said, “MAROOOOOOOOON!” Final Score: 4-0 Oilers

The last time Connor McDavid played against the Philadelphia Flyers he fell, ran into end boards, and broke his collarbone. You know, just in case you hadn’t heard. By the time the game started I was tired of that storyline, but if there is one thing that MSM love doing it is banging home a narrative. I honestly felt bad for Connor McDavid for how many questions he had to answer about the injury considering it happened months ago. I felt even worse for Brandon Manning after finding out that was getting death threats on Twitter over Connor’s broken angel wing. Some of you people have no chill. It’s a game. Relax.

Death threats aside, I did think that the Oilers were cursed, for a minute, when Taylor Hall went crashing into the end boards and was slow to get up. I don’t know what it is about the Philadelphia Flyers but they seem to hold some kind of death card that causes Oilers players to go crashing into the boards. We were lucky this time. Little did Ghost Bear know that Taylor Hall is NHL gumby and his limberness saved him from incurring any serious harm. Luckily, the Philly boards curse was as irrelevant as the Flyers’ hopes in this hockey game. The Oilers played another solid road game (penalties aside) and extended their winning streak to three games. This was a very good hockey game for the Edmonton Oilers.

Speaking of said game, wasn’t it weird to see an Oiler player wearing #19 and not having a feeling of dread that things are likely to go horribly wrong? It was refreshing, and I honestly didn’t remember what that felt like. From where I blog, #19 is a fantastic hockey number and I am glad to see that it will have a new life with newly acquired mountain man, Pat Maroon. Maroon did his best to make #19 great again as he scored a goal and caused the kind of mayhem that Oilers fans have been missing for years. Now I’m not saying that Patrick Maroon will be Hulk McDavid, but it is nice to see the big man causing a ruckus.

If the type of game Maroon had tonight can be a semi regular thing I don’t think it will take long before Oilers fans fall in love.

Wrap it up.

  • This is one of the feistiest Oilers games that I’ve watched in a long time. For once the Oilers have some big men in the lineup and they threw their weight around. Not only were there hits, but the Oilers didn’t back down from the Flyers for one minute, and a lot of that can be attributed to some of the new guys.
  • Connor McDavid has to be the fastest player in the NHL. Taylor Hall is very fast, and Connor is even faster than that. It’s insane to think that he may one day get faster. Lordy.
  • Nail Yakupov scored his sixth goal of the season by driving to the net and banging home Connor McDavid’s rebound. Strange how Nail Yakupov (complimentary player) provides more offense when he’s playing with offensive players. ConYak is back!
  • Taylor Hall scored a huge goal (his 21st) tonight to put the Oilers up by two goals. Hallsy earned that goal by flying into the Flyers zone to pick up the breakaway puck, scoring while falling, and crashing into the end boards. Huge effort by Taylor Hall.
  • I thought Patrick Maroon had a hell of a debut in his first game for the Oilers. He threw the body around, put himself in the tough areas of the ice, and scored his first goal (fifth of the year) as an Edmonton Oiler. Maroon was banging and crashing every time he was on the ice. Refreshing player type for this franchise. Great game.
  • Lauri Korpikoski scored his seventh goal on a great shorthanded effort by both he and Mark Letestu. Those two, along with Hendricks and Lander, earned their pay tonight with some stellar PK work.
  • What can you say about how well Cam Talbot is playing right now? He was rock solid again, and didn’t give the Flyers anything. Which is amazing considering how many power plays they had. It will be fun to see how good Talbot can be behind a competent (future) Oilers defense. Talbot was perfect tonight and finished the game stopping all 35 shots he faced.
  • For as bad as it was to give up seven power play chances, the penalty killers — largely Talbot — were also perfect.

  • What is it with the Philadelphia Flyers and our skilled players crashing into the end boards? Taylor Hall slammed into the end of the rink tonight and he was lucky to get out of unscathed. Not to mention, what was Ghost Bear doing diving for the puck and taking out Hall’s skates?
  • I can’t be the only one that thought the refs made weird calls tonight, right? I could have sworn that Claude Giroux called a penalty in the second period.
  • The Oilers took way too many penalties. They gave Philly SEVEN chances on the power play. Ridiculous. They were lucky that it didn’t come back to bite them in the ass.
  • Todd McLellan briefly benched Jordan Eberle for a lack of effort in the first period. Eberle doesn’t have a great reputation among some Oilers fans for his effort coming back to the defensive zone. It seemed like the silver fox noticed the same thing in the first.
  • It must have been weird for Sam Gagner to see Zack Kassian as an Oiler, right? I know Sam isn’t here anymore but you’d have to think it’s weird that the guy that broke his jaw is now on his former team.
  • Speaking of Gagner, the Flyers had three former Oilers on their roster tonight. (Nick Schultz, Sam Gagner, Chris Vandevelde?.
  • The Flyers were 69% in the face off circle. That’s ugly.

That was easily the best Oilers team game I have watched this season. There were obviously the Connor McDavid shows where he owned the Jackets and the Flames, which were awesome, but this one was different. Talbot was great, and everyone seemed to be ready to go tonight, but the biggest thing that stood out for me was how badass the Oilers were tonight! Anyone remember the last time you could say that?… Me neither.

Simmonds cheap shots Hall, three Flyers get hurt immediately after (not injured thankfully, but feeling bad about their choices). Go after Hall later in the game and Kassian loses it on everyone on the ice!

Then there’s Maroon… What an absolute killer debut. He was a force of nature tonight. Scored a goal, was the first one in to get after Simmonds, and took on two Flyers that spent too much time poking at the puck in Talbot’s crease.

Love the Oilers skill, but this is what it looks like when balanced with players that can take care of the other side of the game. Chia looks pretty smart tonight.

  • Randaman

I get this feeling that everyone (for the most part) likes PC’s vision of what a hockey team should look and play like.

Only 10 years coming but better late than never.

    Go Oil!!

  • potential flush

I’ve been waiting to say this for years. * Ahem * “Boy was #19 a beast tonight! That fellow played like he was angry at the entire world, and took it out on the Flyers. So much emotion in his game. I would be terrified to meet him in an alley.”
Great job P.C. Great game Oilers!

  • CBK

Gryba, Nurse, Hendricks, Maroon, Kassian, Pardy, Cracknell… Hell even Clendening.

All of these men don’t back down.

Finally, the Oilers have players that intimidate and protect our stars.

The best part: these guys have skill.

    • Scratch

Thats 5 games without Jultz and the turnovers have dropped dramatically. Begs the question as to why this guy ever got any ice time which btw he hasn’t dressed in Pittsburgh yet. Seems they are in no hurry to show off their new defenceman

  • Both the Flames and Oilers played the Sabres and Flyers in the past few days, Flames allowed 11 goals against, the Oilers have allowed 1. This, with a far inferior D roster. Talbot has really solidified himself as a top-tier goalie in convincing fashion.

I’m always worried about consistency with this team but I feel that this time, it’s different. Hall’s post-game comments conveyed the idea that they know that a physical checking game will get them wins. I don’t think they’ll repeat the same mistake of playing a high flying fancy style after doing that during the home-stand. I think they’re gonna be alright from here on out till the end of the season.

Speaking of which, it’s hard to believe that there’s only 16 games left in the season. It’s going to be a long offseason. With possible moves over the summer, I’m gonna miss some of these guys. 🙁 And then wait a whole summer to see McDavid again. (Apparently he’s going to be involved in some gong-show tournament, I just want to see him in Blue and Orange or Olympic/IIHF Red)

    • ZoilerZ

But, but, but…Calgary has the “best defensive corps in the league”? How can that be??

Yep, it’s great to see the team get rewarded for physical play. I know I’ve said this (MANY TIMES) before but I think they are almost learning how to win at the NHL level. I always compare it to Neo in The Matrix when he is realizing his powers, hahaha

Watching playoffs (not the Oilers, silly…) over the past couple of years, I remember thinking there’s NO way the Oilers could play in a playoff series and come out alive but they have played so well in these last 5 games, that “I’m saying there’s a chance”.

Next year is our year, right guys?…..guys??

    • GK1980

Always enjoy your insight. 16 games left does suck, and hopefully Chia makes some smart moves this summer. Team looks good right now but ewe have all seen this before. For all we know a 5 game losign streak is in the near future.

Whats with the hate on for the world cup? I think its fine. If the players want to play let them play.

My only concern is if Drai blows a knee playing in this tournament and missing half the NHL season because of it. For example.

  • toprightcorner

The best trade Chiarelli made at the deadline was the big set of steel balls for each of the players. Amazing how a couple bigger players makes everyone play 20 lbs heavier.

  • toprightcorner

I can’t remember the last time I seen #19 on the ice and actually got excited.

No more yelling “DON’T GIVE IT AWAY!!! DON’T GIVE IT AWAY!! YOU IDIOT, YOU GAVE IT AWAY AGAIN!” when #19 has the puck.

  • nuge2drai

    Oiler Domination To Follow

Good to see Yak have another strong game.

This team is starting to develop an identity. Mean and Nasty.

Gryba and Klefbom will make this team even harder to play against.

I think Yandle would be the perfect signing in the OS, or an Eberle trade for Hamonic.

    Sekera Hamonic

    Klefbom Davidson

    Nurse Gryba

  • gongshow

Saw Oilers #19 on the ice and heard the announcer say Schultz and I almost spit out my beer. Then I realized he was talking about Nick Schultz for Philly. Recurring bad dream averted!

  • Oilerchild77

Let’s just review the changes PC has needed/made so far:

    1. Goaltender – Acquired Cam Talbot: Check

    2. NHL defenders – Acquired Andrej Sekera, Eric Gryba, extended Klefbom, Davidson: Half check (not quite done yet)

    3. Size in top nine – Acquired Zack Kassian, Patrick Maroon: Check

    4. Getting rid of Justin Schultz: CHECK!!!!

Well, looks like the rebuild of the rebuild is well underway!

    • toprightcorner

Agreed, all he has left it

      – Top pair RD
      – Top 4 RD
      – Size with more skill in top 6 like
      – If Draisaitl moves to RW, then a big quality 3C (Frans Neilsen)
      – 3rd line LW with some offense and size
      – maybe size on 4th line

The trades and UFA’s are out there plus I expect RFA trades or offer sheets flying around with cap crunch on one of the top RFA markets in years.

Targets include: Hamonic RD, Vatanen RD, Demers RD, Lucic LW, Okposo RW, Frans Neilsen C, Kreider LW, Brouwer RW Matt Martin LW

The exrtra space Kassian and Maroon have created, having a big player on each line makes sens, as long as they have the skills to match. That will help the team in the Western Conference.

      possible line up

      Lucic – McDavid – Yakapov
      Hall – Draisaitl – Maroon
      Kassian – Nuge – Hartnell
      Martin – Letestu – Hendricks

      Klefbom – Hamonic
      Sekera – Demers
      Nurse – Davidson

      Bigger/Badder/Deeper/Better/Same Cap hit

We have a serious log jam for Left handed defenceman. Sekera,Klefbom,Nurse,Reinhardt,Caleb Jones, Yakimov,Pardy. We will eventually have to trade some as we can’t afford to quailify them all when due. Package a few of these guys with Ebs or Nuge and we might snag our #1 defenceman.

        • CBK

Last I checked Yakimov plays C…. But I get your point. A lot of left hand Dmen for sure. Although I wouldn’t be overly concerned with Jones as they will want to develop him properly and give him a few years to develop in junior and the AHL.

  • Oil drop

Missed the second and third period tonight. Result is awesome.

All I can say….with this team as in life never get too high never get too low

    Outstanding streak

  • Am I right?

This was my trade idea for Bagged Milk before he prematurely closed his contest, or I was to slow and lazy. Regardless, boo Bagged Milk!

    Some of Mr. Katz’s money

    Ryan O’Bryne
    Nolan Yonkman
    Matt Pelech
    Maxim Lapierre
    Anthony Stewart
    Akim Aliu

All big guys, like to hit, fight, willing to stick up for team mates, have NHL experience.

No guarantee any of these guys might be a fit, but what have you given up? Just some of Mr. Katz’s money, which I’m more than willing to spend oodles of.

We fans have suffered tooooo much the last 10 years, our high draft pick players are our only consolation prizes for that misery, bringing hope for a better future. I don’t want to give any of them up, just build around them, like our current GM is doing a fine job of to this point.

PS BM your still my fav.

  • hagar

Oilers yearly improvement after being out of the playoffs, or signs of improvement going into next year?

The age old question that history has answered every single time!

Let’s cross our toes that this year is finally the year. No bragging please if the oilers make a show of it, because it is embarrassing to all of us.. let’s just share a quiet “nod,” along with reserved optimism.

Fool me once and shame on you, fool me ten times, shame on me.

solid effort by the lads. I’m glad the we played and won an away game. I’m glad that we have connor. I’m glad that yak scored. glad for cam. I’m glad that we have marroooooon!. “I protect my teammates” he said what a beast. all of players did a great job today. as a fan I can’t help but say what if we had more luck and more points but in reality we don’t. I hope and want this team to win as much games as they can win. good day in oil country

  • Three game win streak you say? So then I guess, Oilers are going a perfect 16 – 0 – 0 to finish out the season to end up with 89 points and take the last playoff spot, and of course Conner wins calder. I’m no Mathologist but that has to pro rate to 456 points right?

Well, I guess, plan the parade?

  • Connor McFly

Now that’s more like it. The three players added at the deadline seemed to get almost everyone on the team jacked. When the Nuge, Pouliot and Klefbom return the team’s performance just might get another mighty boost.

Let’s just hope they can maintain this type of competitiveness. I like it.

  • Rheal1 "Ontario Oilers Fan"

I thought it was Edmonton’s best game in a long time, probably all season.
Next up Columbus tonight and that means another win followed by at least one point Sunday vs Winnipeg. That potential trend will display the indication of a team that wins regularly. Will it happen?
Hopefully yes. Todd must get the momentum going with his crew now.

Since the Oilers are almost mathematically eliminated, I’d focus on regular wins; hopefully with 16 games left we can earn 20-24 points?

I’m putting on my Oilers jersey again like it’s a fresh season(Mclelland has said he’s starting a clean slate). If we finish strong it will give us momentum to start off great next season. Besides we still have a great shot at a decent draft pick(hopefully trade bait),even if we win down the stretch.

  • Chad88

It was the most exciting game I have seen the Oilers play in a long long time. To see the kids jump in there and protect each other. To see the Maroon and Kassian be that big body presence was very nice! Nice 3 game win streak, but these are the Oilers that can be easily get back on a 3 game losing streak. I was absolutely giddy about this game though. Over all fantastic team game.

  • _Bubba

Love how sportsman like Maroon was as he held in Giroux’s Brains right there.. That and scored a goal. Nice.
We must be turning a corner. Flames look to be tanking like drunken Sailors and I don’t care.

    • West

It was Schenn whose brains he held in and who somehow was not required to be evaluated for a concussion after breaking his head on the ice. Hey NHL remember Wideman?
