Introducing Zach Laing

Today, I wanted to take a minute to introduce you guys to a brand new writer to OilersNation. Long story short, I wanted more content for this website and I found a guy that can fill a hole that we’ve had on our team. I’m sure that you’ve seen him around the Oilogosphere and Twitter for years, but today I am happy to announce that we have added Zach Laing to our team. I sat down with Zach to talk about what he’ll be bringing to our team, and what the hell is wrong with the Oilers. Enjoy.

Baggedmilk: Who are you and how did you get here?

Zach Laing: I’m Zach Laing, and I’m the new guy! Since the tender age of 10 during the storied year that Fernando Pisani was scoring shorthanded overtime winners, I have been an Edmonton Oilers fan. Growing up and living in Calgary (until I moved to Banff for this summer), it has been a tough life being a fan of the Oilers.

I’ve dealt with it all, and it’s given me some thick skin over the years.

When I was in High School, I had long wanted to play pro football. Once I realized that wasn’t attainable, I began to follow the Oilers more than I ever had. Somewhere around 2012, Jeanshorts and Baggedmilk ran the legendary and it was the first time I had ever written anything. While I was throwing up nonsense about the Oilers, I quickly realized that I could get paid to watch hockey for the rest of my life. Long story short, just last month I graduated from SAIT with a diploma in journalism, and I currently work for the Bow Valley Crag and Canyon based out of the city that never sleeps, Banff.

For anyone that already knows me, my work has most recently been found on Beer League Heroes, and Copper n’ Blue

BM: What will you be writing for us?

ZL: I’m the news guy! I’m going to be bringing you all the facts about the Oilers. If it’s news, I’ll be covering it.

BM: Why did you want to be a writer at OilersNation?

ZL: Since I began blogging, my goal has always been to reach the top of the Oilogosphere. Through years of blood, sweat, tears and blisters on the tips of my fingers, I’ve finally reached the pinnacle of Edmonton Oiler blogs and I couldn’t be more excited.

BM: In your opinion, what the hell is wrong with this hockey team?

ZL: Chris Pronger. Seriously. Ever since the Oilers traded him the team has been unable to build a successful hockey team. Over the years it has become painfully clear that while first overall picks are a real treat, if you are unable to surround them with adequate talent then you will not progress anywhere.

Just look at the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins – Justin Schultz was all it took to put that team over the top.

BM: Would you say that I’m more of a hero, an icon, or just a mentor to you?

ZL: Baggedmilk is the apple of my eye.

BM: Where can people find you?

ZL: Follow me on Twitter at @Loweded!

As the manager of this website I’m always trying to look at things and figure out ways to try and make it better. I want your experience at OilersNation to be the best it can possibly be, and I thought that one thing we are missing is straight news coverage. I believe that Zach has both the education and experience to cover this team with an objective eye, and I think he will be filling a void and a role that haven’t had around here in a long time. As much as I love yelling about the Oilers, I understand how sometimes all you may want to read is a story about what happened – that’s what Zach will be doing.

With that said, I encourage you all to welcome Zach to the team, follow him on Twitter, and prepare yourselves mentally for news based articles going up on the site. You wanted facts, and now you’ll get them.
