Ranking Peter Chiarelli’s Trades So Far…

ChiarelliPhone

As Peter Chiarelli’s second summer as the Oilers’ GM winds down I thought it would be a good time to take a look at the trades he’s made in his time on the job do far.

According to NHLTradeTracker.com, Chiarelli has made 13 trades since he’s been driving the bus, and I want to know which of those moves you guys think has been his best and worst. Obviously, some of the moves are bigger than others so I ask that you judge the following list based on whether or not you think it was a good move for the team.

After you’ve voted in the poll I encourage you to put your two cents down in the comments section. I’m curious to know what you think are Chiarelli’s best and worst moves as the Oilers’ general manager, and, in my opinion, there’s no better way to do that than by judging others through the power of pollz. With that said, it’s time to put on your teacher’s cap, grab your favourite marking pen, and get to work on evaluating the moves of others.

Korpikoski for Gordon and letestu was a bad trade. Larsen for hall asset for asset was a bad trade too. Reinhardt was also bad. Best one so far is maroon and Schultz since the Oilers only paid money to get Schultz in the first place.

  • Bucknuck

Just because I like the acquisition of Larsson does not mean I think Taylor Hall is a bad player. You can’t win in the NHL without good defense.

Taylor Hall was NOT part of the problem (and neither was Eberle or RNH). I am very sad to see him go, because he was the best part of watching the Oilers for years. I am embarrassed by the way Oiler fans are turning on him, too.

Larsson is a top pairing right shot defender. He performed well in that role and he is only going to get better. Chiarelli might have lost the trade, but just because Hall is awesome, doesn’t mean Larsson “isn’t that good”.

    Here’s my 2 pennies.

    Chia’s priority in my opinion
    1-(RH shot pp guy)
2-Make team gritty, bigger to tougher to play against
3-don’t trade away assets or pics on players not able to step up immediately.
    4-build depth in required areas

So hall vs larsson, we initially loose this trade however we needed a solid defencemen with offense – so far he I unproven to put up points because of his role in NJ . I believe he has huge upside and potential to show way better than he is. This could be a our 2nd pair pp guy.

Mm trade I would have preferred a trade for a rh shot prospeBel Bel ct or fringe nhl rh dman.
Reinhart was expected to step in and be the #3 Lh solution which didn’t quite pan out, still could but the bet was for last year, thank God Davidson did!
Reinhart is not a bust however he will turn the corner soon a be solid for us. Again we needed a RH shot pp guy!!!!
The gryba trade was awesome, thanks would love to see him back , so hurry up CHIA!!
Marron and kassian great additions for virtually zero.
Lucic signing fantastic he will punish teams and in fine with the term as he will only be 35.

Also I hope yak take a huge leap and is given a chance with mcd, so we can role 3 deep ass lines.

    Luc,mcd, yak
    Poul, Nuge, ebs
    Marron,Leon, pak
    Hendo,let,kassian.

Also lander needed to get his confidence back and would like to se him step into the 4th line with kassian and pak sharing 2-3 line roles when needed.
Keep pujuarvii down in the ahl only bring up for injuries or if we are loosing an he is tearing up the ahl.

Hmmm I figure the best trade is a tie between getting Maroon or Kassien both players filled glaring needs for us
Worst trade was for Korps his nick name says it all I figure
I suspect most fans who disapprove of the Hall trade are putting so much value into the high cost (the never ending tank job) of getting him. Due to the incompetence of previous management (spits) Hall never got any support on the ice and the poor coaching carrousel (spits again) never taught him the proper way to play in the nhl. Thus Hall has no clue how to play a team game and no clue on defence. Finally played a whole season last year but ran outta gas at game 50. Top 3 LW in game? Uhmmm imo not even close only had 10 more points then Lucic who well replace Hall and improve our team.

  • fran huckzky

Every GM is going to make some good trades and some bad trades. If he isn’t doing anything he is Ned Flanders Tambellini. AS long as the team is improving the Gm is doing his job. I have every confidence that the team has improved immensely under this GM.

  • Spiel

Reinhart trade is the worst of Chiarelli’s moves.

At 16th the Oilers could have had offensive dynamos Barzal or Kyle Connor.
At 33rd they could have had Sebation Aho who played on the same team as Puljujarvi in the finish league last year and basically doubled his points and is only 10 months older than Jesse.

To get just one of Barzal, Connor, or Aho the Oilers would need to give up more than Reinhart now. Terrible trade.

Overall I think PC has done just fine.

The proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

I for one will be happy to cheer the Oilers on in the new rink. If Larsson, Reinhart, Maroon, Kassian and the other recent hires / trades take it up a notch then all the better.

The glow from watching McDavid start off the last season with 5 goals at the prospect colour game and seeing him smoke the Bears with two great chances on his first shift kept me warm all last winter.

As luck would have it PC has plenty going. McDavid was one such lucky charm. His magnetism has got Sekera & Lucic signed. Puljujarvi was another gift and Benson was just a smart move to start the second round.

    Fans cheer. Losers talk trash.

Of all the posters on OilersNation, Zarny is the one i would least expect to show some tunnel vision. He is always logical and looks at the bigger picture. Logic is a common trait found in almost every post he makes. That doesn’t seem to be the case this time

Trades are not made in a vacuum. Every time personnel changes are made, the team as a whole is considered. Sometimes a series of trades get you to where you want to be and it only makes sense if you look at the whole instead of each individual move.

color me surprised @ some of the reactions in this thread

If Gretz can be traded, so can Hall. I think a lot of the fans, myself included, just think there wasnt enough coming back.If the trade was Hall+ + for Suban,I think all would be calm on this issue.

One can debate if Hall is 3rd or 10th best LW in the NhL.,but for sure Larsson is not the 3rd or 10 th best
D-man in the NHL. He is not even the 6th or 20th best Dman in the NHL.

Makes it obvious that the trade was lopsided.

    • daryl

You make a good point but a top RH dman is worth a lot more than a top LW man. So you are not comparing apples to apples. It does appear that we paid too much but it was a need that had to be addressed without it we were just going to spin our wheels. Lets face it with Hall in our line up what did we achieve? With Larsson we will make the playoffs.

I voted on all but the Larsson Hall trade. Who the heck knows right now? That one could take 2-3 years to measure but voting with zero games?

    Can’t do it. Nope.
