The hockey is happening! Across many leagues, levels and countries, Oilers players and prospects are in action. Here’s a quick look at progress, with an emphasis on the bubbling under prospects.

Leon Draisaitl helped Germany qualify for the Olympics (Group C) this weekend. He finished the tournament 3-2-5 in 3 games played and looks ready for the World Cup of Hockey and then Oilers camp.

Two players to follow this season in the Russian league:

  • Bogdan Yakimov 1, 1-0-1 and 13:12 in his first game of the year. He got a late start due to injury.
  • Ziyat Paigin 4, 0-0-0 and 16:16 a night. He has missed a couple of games early in the schedule.

  • Filip Berglund went 3gp, 0-1-1 for the Swedish U20 team in a recent tournament. Also 2, 0-1-1 for Skellefteå AIK in the SHL (I believe pre-season).

  1. Tyler Benson, Vancouver Giants (WHL) 2, 1-2-3
  2. Ethan Bear, Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL) 2, 1-1-2
  3. Caleb Jones, Portland Winterhawks (WHL) 1, 0-0-0
  4. Markus Niemelainen, Saginaw Spirit (OHL) 1, 0-0-0

Early days, but Benson is healthy and Bear is playing well in a year where he could post some impressive boxcars once the regular season begins. I am uncertain if any of these players will be in the mix for the World Juniors, but strong performances in their junior leagues should be the expectation.

we finally look like we have some actual depth in our system and proof that if you look hard enough, you can find quality players in the later rounds.

Can’t wait for some more hockey, training camp and World Cup coming up finally! Hope Leon is rested and fresher this season, could have a breakout year. Glad to see him putting up some numbers already. Looking forward to seeing Puljujarvi in camp and preseason, I think he’ll be as good or better than expected. If he earns a spot on the roster, great. If not they now have a bit more depth to let him develop, but after watching him play last year I think he’s ready for top 9 minutes and maybe a little PP time. I’m thinking PC is counting on it or maybe he would have tried to sign Pirri. Who knows?

Wow! September and the good news just rolls along.

Having Drai as a solid third line pivot could sure be a boost for our club.

Benson, Bear and C Jones could all be in the next wave hitting pro next season with some strong forward momentum. In the mean time we should have a very solid Condors roster. This year we should have several legit young prospects being able to move up to the show as required. I’m thinking Reinhart, Cagguila, Slepyshev, Pakarinen, Oesterle and Brossoit at some point this season.

Is there a date set for the Bears/Rookies?

Benson is a big, solid kid. Lucic, without equipment, looks to be the same size.

That is the sound of Gaudreau and the flames soiling their Stanfields.

We have plenty of individual talent and skillset to do well and a lot better than what team has done , but the transition to team skills play has lacked balance miserably over last several seasons . When the team skills start matching better with the individual skillset of club , we will climb markedly .

In that photo above, Tyler Benson looks like he should have just graduated from university. I remember thinking that on draft day – he looks 24 or 25.

  • Brief news but good news!

I almost couldn’t stop laughing at that Coach’s Corner edit.

But I stopped and I cried because after watching it for the 5th time I noticed it was Larsson that Hall beat with that beautiful pass across the middle.
