Happy Connorversary!

It was two years ago today that Bill Daly flipped the golden card that gave the Oilers the luxury to draft Connor McDavid, and I wanted to take a minute to wish you all a Happy Connorversary!

***Warning: Video contains coarse language***

Do you remember where you were on April 18th, 2015? I do. I was sitting on my couch watching the playoffs when Sportsnet broke into their draft lottery proceedings. At first, I wasn’t even really planning to watch it. What was the point? I had already gotten myself into the headspace that the Oilers would be drafting Noah Hanifin or Dylan Strome and trying to convince myself that they would be worth the wait. They may not be Connor McDavid, but they’ll be contributors down the line. I got myself to a place where I was cool with that fact. Never in my wildest imagination did I expect that the Oilers would have the golden card flip over in their favour.

As we all know, having Bill Daly flip over that golden ticket set off a series of events that changed the course of the franchise forever. Within days, the Oilers had moved MacT into a dark corner somewhere, hired Peter Chiarelli, landed Todd McLellan, and started one final death march that resulted in the former face of the franchise, Taylor Hall, getting moved to New Jersey for Adam Larsson. Some may call it luck, some may call it a deal with the devil, but whatever it was that actually happened to have Connor McDavid land in our lap might be one of the greatest gifts the Oilers have ever seen. And on this day I will always remember how lucky we are to have him.

Happy Connorversary, Nation!

WHERE WERE YOU?

I want to know where you were when Bill Daly showed the world our golden ticket. I want to know how many times you rewound your PVR just to confirm that what you saw actually happened (it was about 10x for me). If you have a story about where you were when the Oilers won the lottery I’d love to read it. It was one of those moments that was so unexpectedly special that it almost seems hard not to remember what was going on.

I was in Calgary at the yearly nerdgasm… my brother-in-law texted me saying Oilers had McDavid and I called him a f*ckin liar and told him not to mess with me…

The day of the 2015 draft lottery I was at Coachella. Leading up to that weekend in Cali, I didn’t pay much attention to the draft, assuming the likelihood of landing McDaddy was very slim and I had already came to peace with accepting Strome or Hanifin (much like this year assuming we wouldn’t get Pool Party). Caught in the midst of partying, I actually forgot the lottery was even going on. I was waiting in line to fill up my water bottle at the festival when I got a text. All it said was, “We got him.” I was confused and dismissed it as a meaningless rogue message, but replied, “What?” It was then confirmed that we had been granted the golden ticket to Connor. At that point, I started running around freaking out screaming like a beheaded chicken. Not a single other person there knew why and must have thought I was clinically insane. It was a weird feeling to be cellying so hard but no one joining me or understanding why (the rest of our crew was from Calgary *suckers). The “Let’s go Oilers” chant then followed, along with randomly screaming MCDAVID every 2 minutes. I eventually saw another Oilers hat in the crowds and found another group from Edmonton to celebrate one of the greatest days of our lives.

It’s interesting the events that we are able to recall exactly where we were and what we were doing. Usually significant life/world altering events. For oiler fans this qualifies!

Looks like they’ve added code to make the comments section look like it used to.

But now what will everyone complain about?…

    Boo Baggedmilk!!!

I’m also interested to see if the comments magically shoot up by the hundreds… Lol.

I was at the Shaw Conference Centre watching a cheer competition. Tired from all the music and cheering, walked up to the meeting point where the TV’s were showing the Draft. At that moment, was revealed that the Oilers had won the lottery. All of the other dads turned their frowns upside down and smiles were ear to ear. After a bunch of high 5’s with people I did not know, we were all on our phones. I texted my buddy who went to Vegas telling him that we were going to draft McDavid! He flipped out, grabbed his buddy and went to the nearest sports bar. They didn’t even tell their girlfriends. It was a McHappy Day!!

My wife and I were going out for dinnerwith our best friends ,eating at the Keg that night. So as were waiting for our table we decided to sit at the bar and have some drinks whole we were waiting. They had the draft lottery on TV so we were watching it. Then all of the sudden Bill Daly flip the card for Edmonton and it was colour in gold?. Then phone was buzzing and it had text message coming from the Oilers web site stateing The Edmonton Oilers won the Connor McDavid sweepstakes. I was so happy That I screamed in the bar that everyone looked over . I said we won the McDavid pick!. That change the direction for the franchise around . After 10 seasons of frustration with the Oilers at least there is a shinning light at the end of the tunnel.

I woke up from a 2 hour nap. Usually when you wake up from a nap like that you feel like a sack of crap. Checked my phone and wow I couldn’t believe it.. the saviour landed on Edmonton’s lap

  • Hemmertime83

I was on the toilet. I was watching the lottery and they cut to commercial and I thought I had time. I heard my phone blow up with like 10 straight text messages and was wondering what the hell until i heard my neighbors chanting his name

I was in Houston, Texas eating out at Lupe’s Mexican restaurant with me wife, me best buddy who is also a diehard Oilers fan from Newfoundland and his very soon-to-be wife. We were half sauced on their famous and extremely potent Margaritas. Pretty much forgot about the lottery and failed to realize it had started, when all of a sudden our phones start blowing up. Getting texts from all my buddies on the Rock. I started to get chills and we checked out tsn.ca. McJesus, Mary and Joseph, we got Connor! We got McJesus!!! We did a happy dance, proceeded to get absolutely smashed on margaritas and maybe yelled McJesus about 97 more times that night! I can’t explain our shock and delight!.A night I’m sure neither of us will ever forget. Or all the Texan rednecks sitting at and around our table. Our life as Oilers fans changed forever that night.

I was watching the draft lottery in my kitchen. The golden ticket was announced and I yelled “oh my God!” over and over.
My stepson came running upstairs thinking something was wrong.
Told him the news. It was GLORIOUS!

My nine year old daughter and I,we’re at a family members baby shower, and her husband hates sports, and wouldn’t put on the lottery. So my daughter and I sneaked out, drove home, and settled in to watch. I remember how long if felt,to get to the meat and potatoes of the show, and my daughter and I cheered just as hard, when we saw that Connor wasn’t going to the Leafs, and remember feeling content with that much. The as soon as Daly said “and we have a winner” my daughter and I leapt of the couch, screaming so loud, that her poor cat sh*t himself, and hid for the next two days. I remember reading that Daryl Katz and Harrison had a similar reaction to the news,so that made it feel pretty cool too. My daughter still brings that day up,and it’s one of the biggest reasons that I will always be a fan of Connor McDavid.

I was in the Hospital, my son who was 1 year old at the time laying beside me in the crib. Once announced I fist pumped into the air and started to shake, got goosebumps and my wife asked me if I’m ok…

  • Ronr68

I was sitting in my living room. I had to rewind it three times just to be sure it really happened. I was talking to my buddy after that and we knew that MacT and Lowe would be removed from any position of responsibility. (I personally wouldn’t have let them be in the same room as McDavid). The most important day in Oilers’ history, next to the day we were brought into the NHL.

I was at Pizza Delight in Antigonish, NS celebrating our beer league teams league victory when the golden ticket was flipped. Originally lost my breath due to the shock before letting out a loud YEAAAAH followed by raising both hands in the air in a victory salute
