Weekend Update: October 29 2017

Vancouver Giants winger Tyler Benson (photo) is finally playing hockey and scored a goal in his first game back. During two weekend games, Benson had six and seven shots on goal. At the other end of the spectrum, the Bakersfield Condors were no match for the Stockton Heat, as the Calgary Flames’ farm club won games by 3-0 and 5-3 scores Friday and Saturday. Here’s a look at the week.

Benson did a thing and it didn’t require surgery. Rejoice!

9 shots for Jesse on Saturday and no dice? Any idea if his shots are coming from low % areas or if he’s just awfully snakebit?

    • Randaman

Or maybe he just isn’t that good on smaller ice. It wouldn’t be the first time a European draft pick didn’t work out. FAIL as far as I’m concerned. Draft + 2 and still no progress.

      • OriginalPouzar

If you heard the interview from his coach you would know there is significant progress. Despite a complete lack of offensive acumen around him, Fleming says he is driving the play and creating offence despite the boxcars.

Recall, Leon Draisaits had 2 points in 6 games and was a -5 in the AHL in his draft plus 2 year.

No progress for Leon looking at the box cars either.

      • McRaj

I think expectations of Jesse need to be lowered. He has never produced any offense at any level save for the world juniors. I think his ceiling is that of a 50 point two way winger who excels in his own zone. Again, nothing wrong with that, as he can do well on the second line, but likely not what the Oilers wanted. Not his fault, rather blame the scouting.

  • OriginalPouzar

With Safin’s 2G and 2A tonight he’s up to 20 points in 17 games and 7th in the Q in scoring – great start being a rookie in the league.

Maksimov’s goal was a beauty – a one-timer from the Ovechkin spot on the PP – he had tons of shots this week but only the 1 point.

I believe that not only Berglund but also Lagesson is hurt – not a ton of info out there – Berglund supposed to be back this past week so hopefully soon.

Fleming did an interview last week and praised Jesse’s offensive game even though the box cars aren’t there – he is creating offence. The issue is likely lack of offensive acumen around him – his centers have been Josh Currie, Brade Malone and Grayson Downing – yeesh! How I miss Anton Lander.
