Weekend Update January 21st, 2018

The week that was with the Oilers system was a good one. Nugent-Hopkins’ injury has made way for Iiro Pakarinen to return to the NHL. I’m wondering if Oilers fans will have to start a JetsNationesque #FreeRattie for him to get a call to the big show and have his chance. In the WHL, Kailer Yamamoto is picking up steam, as well as fresh addition Cameron Hebig. Meanwhile in the ECHL, All-star Shane Starrett gives you a highlight three-pack this week.

      That’s a solid question.

I look at three teams as the young star studded pools of talent:

I can’t believe the youth on the Flyers and in their system personally. They have Carter Hart (World Juniors) and Anthony Stolarz in the net. Morin and Provorov on the back end with Travis Sanheim too. In the forward corps, as well as adding Nolan Patrick this year they have Leier and Oscar Lindblom with Jordan Weal too.

They are poised to transition to their youth well if even half of those kids meet their potential.

112 shots in 3 games? Poor Wells, I can understand his save percentage now. As a Goalie myself, save percentage doesn’t tell the full story. If you are getting 37 shots a game, your team is generally getting outplayed. That means lots of goals that you really can’t do much about. I know that there are save percentage stats for things like 2-on-1s and breakaways, and they are generally worse then the overall save percentage. If Wells is getting lots of 2-on-1s and breakaways, his SP would lean more towards his save percentage on those shots, which will always be worse. Maybe that isn’t the story for the whole season and he really isn’t that good, but I’m willing to bet otherwise.
