This morning on Twitter, the Oilers revealed their third jerseys for the upcoming season and, much to my personal delight, they decided to go back to the royal blue and orange colour scheme that we’ve known and loved for a long time.
According to the tweets, these 40th Anniversary Jerseys will only be worn four times this year with three of those games coming against Pacific Division rivals ((Nov 29th vs. Los Angeles, Dec 9th vs. Calgary and Mar 7th vs. Vancouver) and once against an old Smyth Division foe (Dec 31st vs. Winnipeg).

Personally, I’m a huge fan of these jerseys and I actually wish that these were the unis that the team wore on a nightly basis, but I guess four times per week will have to do for the time being. Maybe it’s just my fondness for the early days of rebuild 2.0, but these are the jerseys I think about when I think of the Edmonton Oilers. There’s something about this combination of blue and orange that pulls on my heartstrings and fandom, and I was pretty excited to see that they would be bringing them back, albeit for only four games. That said, I’m just happy that I’ll be able to see Connor McDavid rocking these dreamy beauties again this season.
We're also excited to unveil the #Oilers retro jersey that will be worn four times this season vs. former Smythe Division opponents, plus the 40th anniversary jersey patch that will be worn on all jerseys during 2018-19! pic.twitter.com/cLgrQBxWY9

What do you think about the new/old jerseys? Fans? Hate it? Wish the team had done something a little more creative? Let me know in the comments.

Retro??? Looks like their last blue jersey. I really like the 40th anniversary patches though.
Echos the 1979 jersey, makes sense. I’m still waiting on my chance to snag a McFarlane jersey. Those were the best 3rd jersey when they came out, and they’ve aged well IMHO.
Confusingly unpopular opinion, but I agree with you. Third jersey should be easily distinguished, something hard to achieve when your official crest has never really changed. The McFarlane jersey accomplished that in spades.
Wish we would dump the blaze orange hunting uniforms and go back to the blue.
Where is Al Hamilton’s No. 3?
Al Hamilton is not in the Hall of fame. Looks like they used that standard not retired numbers.
Right next to Val Fonteyne’s #8 at the bottom of Katz’s sock drawer.
Only 4 times a year? I was hoping for more dates.
Give me the old home Nike whites from the mid 80’s and I would die a happy man. Baby blue and the red stripe on the shoulders made it my favorite of all time.

Huh, weren’t these the home jerseys not 2 seasons ago?
The 40th anniversary logos look great but I’d rather have the “retro” jersey as number one.
Isn’t it crazy how time flies? I was a young lad of 9 years old when they joined the NHL. Hard to believe 40 years have passed. Hopefully they have a couple more Stanley Cups in them before another 40 years go by. Always liked the away blue jersey.
So familiar, it feels like it was only two seasons ago …
How could they leave Al Hamilton’s number off the patch?
New jerseys are great.
I have to ask, what happened to Edmonton’s participation in Young Stars. I thought maybe Edmonton and Calgary were doing their own thing, but I guess not. Oilers prospects now face off against NAIT. That’s it, nothing else. No game against UVA, apparently do to a “Falling out”, and no games against Flames, Canucks, and Jets prospects. Who’s idea is this? Is this like some gov’t pipeline BS or just say no to BC wine or something? What about young men getting a chance to make their mark in hockey and getting a chance to showcase their skill?
Bad bad bad. Selfish pricks.
Calgary and Vancouver kept sending meatheads to rough up our future stars. I see this as a similar situation to the removal of the Joey Moss Cup. Ask Ben Eager if he thought some of the invited players took the JMC game too serious.
Haha “4 times per week”… I wish!!
awsome the way it should be, the orange can die.
I’ve bought so many jersey’s over the years, that I’m not buying another. I’m more interested in how they can create good other swag that is more appropriate for day to day life – ex: hats/hoodies/jackets…
I think it would have been awesome if they made the jersey using the navy instead of the royal blue. Something different, but still paying honoring the classic.
I did a quick and dirty mockup of such a thing on Twitter:

I agree, it would’ve looked fresher and still paid homage to the classic.
I’ve learned that all these jersey ideas come from Katz himself.
From reading Oilers group and blogs I think the majority agree that the:
2013-2015 royal blue home jerseys are the staple home jersey and the white ones are the staple away jersey
2015-2017 orange jersey is a cool 3rd jersey
And I wouldn’t mind if they alternated between the royal blue and orange at home.
I would say there is a minority that actually like last season’s jerseys. They literally look like pylons at home. The white away is kind of cool, but the colour shades have nothing to do with Addidas’ limitations when other teams didn’t change their shade one iota. It was Katz’ decision.
Instead of retro, they should call them the ‘real’ jerseys. This jersey should always be in the circulation, and worn most often. I really hate the new orange colour, it’s just a weird orange. If they kept the original orange, I might have been able to stand the darker blue, but they still should not have changed it. They had it right with the royal’s and the orange third. Looks a lot better not only on the ice, but everywhere. Who wants to wear orange t-shirts all the time, and the dark blue looks weird with jeans. I have not purchased anything since the change, and I won’t unless it’s the ‘real’ colours. The bummer is that a lot of my repetoire is Oilers gear. Not sure what I’m going to do once my royal blue clothes are worn out.
