Oilers Prospect Update: CHLers Shine, Bogdan Yakimo-ved?

The kids are alright down in the CHL ranks this week. Bouchard and Samorukov each racked up four assists and Maksimov had himself a hat trick to go along with an apple for the week.

Goaltending wise Starrett had a great shutout with the Condors and Wells looks solid in Wichita.

Some more headlines to have a look at:

Oiler claim Zykov and send down Russell – The Oilers took a flyer on the waiver pick up Zykov from Carolina and this move means their AHL regulars get more time back in Bako.

Bogdan Yakimov on the move? – I am honestly confused by this news. The link there is in Russian so the translation I am reading has Bogdan signing a deal with another KHL team mid-season? Anyways, Yakimov likely could use a change of scenery with only three points in his first 27 games.

Baggedmilk checks out a piece on Joel Persson – A look from across the pond at one of the more promising Oilers property.

  • You’re correct on Yakimov — he was released by Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk last week, and subsequently signed with Avangard Omsk. It’s a decent move for him, although a bit of a double-edged sword; Avangard is a much stronger team, but he likely won’t get nearly as much ice-time there (he’s averaging just 4:05 in the two games he’s played for Avangard, compared to 13:25 in 27 games with Neftekhimik).

Russell re-called today as Zykov has some immigration issues and isn’t on the trip.

Safin hasn’t played the last few games and he’s actually now back in Edmonton meeting with the Oiler doctors for a lower body injury – not sure if its the hip that kept him out of camp and/or the LBI from earlier this season that forced him to miss a good chunk of games (and not sure if that was a continuation of the hip issue either).

A good day today for some of the CHL prospects (to add to the stats above):

Two more goals for Maksimov and the 1st star.

Samorukov adds a late goal in an 8-1 win – finishes with 1G/1A, plus 3 with a couple shots on net. Really starting to heat up offensively.

Bouchard with a goal in a 6-3 win – finishes plus 3 with 4 shots on net.

  • Ted

Prospect Pontus Aberg now has 9 goals … Anaheim loving there booze hound. Can’t blame them the kid is scoring and moved them into first place in the Pacific with a 6-5 win over ALL CAPS!

I’m not upset or second guessing anyone but could someone tell me why we always concentrate on Yamamoto and Jessie, when guys like Gambardella, Benson, Hebig, Jones etc are putting up better numbers?
Is it because of where they were drafted? It seems to me that Jones & Gambardella have been stuck in that league for a few seasons. Have they ever had coffee?
