The Oilers needed a better effort after that dud against New Jersey. The Coyotes are better than the Devils, but look at their roster. I know they’ve been on a bit of a roll but that is a very mediocre forward group and the Oilers should be competitive based on Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl alone.
The Oilers really needed a win in regulation. Giving a point to Arizona doesn’t do much. They’re still seven points with a game in hand but that’s a difficult gap to close with just 11 games left.
Still, a win is a win! Regulation or not, the Oilers gain two points and that was a solid game all things considered.
THE BRIGHT SIDE
- Those Kachina jerseys are elite and I won’t hear otherwise. The Coyotes need to switch to them full time.
- Best way to kill a penalty is to score a goal. Draisaitl takes a poor penalty and McDavid bails him out.
- Posts! The post saved the Oilers a few hands. All hail post!
- I thought an Alex Galchenyuk hat trick was inevitable. Especially with that late power play. I was pleasantly surprised it didn’t happen.
- McDavid in overtime is such a cheat code.
- I liked Andrej Sekera again. He makes a lot of small good plays that the Oilers badly need.
- Draisaitl hits 90 points for the first time in his career.
THE FACE PALMERS
- The Coyotes outshot the Oilers 12-4 in the first period.
- Matt Benning scores! Then the Oilers immediately give up a goal. Not great.
- Milan Lucic takes a penalty with seven minutes left in the third. It was a bit of a soft call but that can’t happen.
- Absolutely no one was trying to score in the last couples minutes of regulation. That was hard to watch.
- Oilers Nation Twitter is still in jail. Keep us in your thoughts.

Mad that they didn’t use my suggested headline for when Klefbom got hit in the groin with a puck: Oscar grouchy after taking one on the can. https://t.co/IP4LCTl8Wz

I don’t even know how hard McDavid was skating — he blew by OEL like it was effortless.

Draisaitl took that penalty so that McDavid could get that short handed goal. Basically assisted on it!

As @lowetide once said: The Oilers penalty kill can go to hell.

Me: How do the Oilers still kind of have a shot at the playoffs?
Connor McDavid: *Does this*
Me: Oh right.

2-2 in the third, but we still haven’t heard from Rieder yet.

Should Drasaitl should get the A from Lucic in the offseason?

keep winning, have pride, even if you fight and scratch to the last game only to be one point out of the playoffs… pride. forget about the draft lottery
I believe the team is doing that and you are right.
Playoff talk is over. This team needs to talk about next season and how they will deal with cap hell.
We’ll cross that bridge when they get there. First we need a GM.
Great game by both Kuemper and Mikko tonight.
Goaltending matters.
Disappointed that they didn’t go all or nothing in the last few minutes of the game. The positive…they did just beat a team that was beating everyone.
Most disappointed today..Sportsnet panel..they couldn’t discuss mcd want to leave oilers ??
If they miss playoffs next season and the management is pretty much the same then the possibility is huge
Shut up with the Conner leaving crap!! He’s not going anywhere but to the playoffs and Stanley with the Oil. He’s not a loser or a quitter! He’s a leader and will lead the Oil to the Stanley Cup. Be patient!! Rome wasn’t built in a day. Slowly but surely the Oil are getting the player experience and players that Conner will lead! Go Oilers (with Conner) Go!! Now shut the f up about him leaving!
Oh muffin. So cute of you. Why isn’t he leaving a team going nowhere, in a dump of a town, in the middle of the frozen tundra, when he could be playing for a contender, in a better city runner the same $?
Care to explain with reasons and not by being all butt sore and stuff?
I agree w Bung, one more year of circus and McDavid asks for a trade
Plus, If he leaves and goes to a place like Florida/Nevada which has no income tax he saves millions in taxes.
it ain’t over till it’s over
it’s over
Try just to enjoy the game. There is still games to be played – we know what the odds are, but it shouldn’t stop you from cheering.
Have you ever seen this guys comments? Not possible. He usually only shows up after losses and comments the same thing pretty much word for word over and over. Sometimes I picture Mr Bung as a chubby little guy with his friends in a food court pretending to know about the Oilers. Other times I imagine him looking like Tom Hanks in Castaway after being slapped around by the past 13 years of this frustrating team and all he can manage to say is one line… “it’s over”. It helps give the comments some more depth.
Again, it ain’t over till it’s over.
It was over in December.
Last year it was over in November.
Welcome to bettmans NHL.
What do you mean by Bettman’s NHL?
At the end of the season this pathetic organization has to make big changes or they will be a team on the outside of the playoffs looking in, yet again. This could be a great time to trade either Draisaitl or McD as this would be the fastest way to rebuild and they would return a kings ransom for the Oilers. Does either of them want to be part of a 3-5 year rebuild in order to have a top 5 team? Keep them and you have two 100 point a season players but no team success. I’m sure this isn’t going to be a popular post but what has this team done with these two players in the lineup but regress?
What an uninformed comment.
Not uninformed but a realistic comment. Enjoy having two 100 point scorers who seem more content to play for points rather then help the Oilers make the playoffs. Don’t whine about the Oilers have no wingers to play with McD when Crosby can take unknown wingers and make them very good players.
You might think Jake Guentzel is an AHL quality winger, reality is he’s going to be good wherever he plays. Hornqvist might have not been good in your books, but 2-3 years ago when he was playing with Crosby he was better than anybody McDavid had other than Leon. Reality is Penguins find good wingers.
If they do that and fail the Oilers would never recover. Salary cap will go up and those two contracts will look better and better. That has rarely worked out. Lindros comes to mind, but more often the team that gets the big star wins. Only for the right deal, but most teams are too smart to offer a king’s ransom.
Why am I seeing a Flair Airlines ad that suggests Winnipeg? They don’t have an airport…
HOW ABOUT THOSE BAKERSFIELD CONDORS EH?
That was bad hockey, people who are still speaking about playoffs please just shut up already, it’s sad.
What’s sad is a defeatist attitude. Some players like Benning are earning a job for next year, and I’m excited for the future. There is a number of prospects that are nearly ready for the NHL in Bakersfield. This season isn’t over and there is no tanking in this team, and I respect that.
You also do not know very much about an NHL calibre team by the looks of it. As far as a number of prospects for next year that can contribute? Maybe Benson and Yamo for forwards, maybe Jones and Lagesson on D. But we have a log jam on D with contracts so probably not. Defeatist or realist. I do not choose to be willfully ignorant about this team because you and some other naive people do.
Relevant games headed towards April? Yes please.
Regulation win would have been better.
