Inside the Nation: Culture, the draft lottery, and Keith Gretzky out?

Despite missing the playoffs for the 12th time in the 13 years, it’s been a very busy week in Oil country and Dusty Nielson is back to make sense of it all. On today’s episode of Inside the Nation, he looks at rumblings that Keith Gretzky has already been told he’s not getting the job, the draft lottery, and much more.

To start off today’s episode, Dusty looks at the rumours he’s heard that Keith Gretzky has already been told he will not be getting the GM job in Edmonton. According to Nielson, he’s had a couple of very reliable sources confirm the news and that he is sticking to his tweet. From there, he jumped into the NHL Draft and offers a couple of suggestions on who might be available when the Oilers pick at 8th overall. Next up, Dusty runs through the Oilers’ culture and what can be done to change it. This morning, Wanye wrote a well thought out piece on how the team can develop a winning culture, and what needs to be done to turn things around from where we’ve been over the last decade. To say that Dusty was fired up in this episode would be an understatement and we know that you will be too after watching.

So jealous of Flames, Leafs & Jets fans. Edmonton is electric when the Oilers are in the playoffs. I’m ready to see McDavid set some playoff records instead of staring at the Oilers roster on CapFriendly. C’mon Katz, it’s time to step up and lay down the law.

  • OilerForLife

How ever we draft has to have good defensive skills and knows how to put the biscuit in the basket. Is it possible to draft for players who are good in the faceoff and can penalty kill.

    • Reg Dunlop

Just put the biscuit in the basket? How about guys that give 110%, guys that leave it all on the ice, guys that do all the little things right, natural born leaders, physical freaks that won’t be denied, guys that overcame a ton of adversity, guys that will take one for the team, guys that will really send a message. Or most importantly, guys with new sport cliché’s.

  • OilerForLife

Dustin getting excited with the Blue Oyster Cult. At this point, it doesn’t matter what Katz says it will simply upset the fans. I say I don’t want to hear from him, I just want to see improvement starting next season – on the Ice! That’s it! That’s all!

We can talk until we are blue in the face right now, and it means nothing. Changes on the ice that result in actually winning is the only thing that will make any difference on how I feel about this franchise.

  • OilTastic

yup the Oilers “culture” is one of sucking! and yet the OBC clings to it like there’s something there! there isn’t, there’s nothing but failure! this is proof that this disorganization never listens to it’s fans or even the media!

  • camdog

Wayne Gretzky might being getting paid more than the entire pro scouting department. I know there’s talk about the Oilers lack of analytics, but they don’t really even believe in investing in professional scouts. I’m guessing they consider Mactavish a scout though, a scout that no other NHL team will hire to scout for them…
