Oilers confirm Daryl Katz is dealing with life-threatening illness

The Oilers held a press conference today to officially introduce Ken Holland as the team’s new President of Hockey Operations and General Manager. Alongside Holland was Bob Nicholson and Daryl Katz, who we hadn’t seen make a public appearance in several years.

To be blunt, Katz’s appearance was at the front of mind for many people following the press conference. Fans were shocked to see how different he looked since the last time we saw him publicly a few years ago. As we soon learned, Mr Katz is dealing with health issues that have caused him to have multiple surgeries as he continues to battle for his life.

Shortly after the press conference, John Shannon confirmed that the Oilers’ owner has been dealing with a life-threatening sinus infection over the past few years. The infection apparently has a 50/50 survival rate and he has had three surgeries over the past two years. Furthermore, Shannon reported that Katz carried around an IV bag at all times during the Oilers’ playoff run back in 2017.

As a fan of the Oilers, I appreciated Katz making an appearance at the press conference to take responsibility for the struggles of the organization under his tenure as owner. Given what he’s going through right now in regards to his health, it’s incredibly commendable to make a public appearance as he did and we want to thank him for doing so. It’s important for the fans to hear from the owner and we know how difficult it must have been for him to step forward in this setting.

Let’s respect Mr. Katz privacy, stop making comments about his appearance, and wish him and his family all the best at this time.

He could have easily skipped this presser, but didn’t. Props for still showing up and I wish him good luck. Brings things into perspective that this is just a game.

To be fair, people go on the information they have – and all Oiler fans have is an absent owner not seen OR heard from in years, so really what does anyone expect when he pops up out of the blue? Yeah you’re going to have people probably making jokes. Now that the truth is out I’d like to think people respect it more.

Shoo he really doesn’t look that good. Good god man, I hope whatever he’s going through passes smoothly and he’s able to recover from this. Speedy recovery Mr. Katz and I hope you le able to be a part of the solution moving forward

@Derian Hatcher…….I am with you on the feeling shame, I have been pretty hard on the old boy as well. Hope everything works out for him and the team. Here is to a fresh start. Cheers!

I had a bad sinus infection a few years ago (oh my god that sucked), and the steroids they made me shoot up my nose actually made my nose look different, sagging it down in the middle a little bit. Still that way today. But man, when it finally started to drain, it was the most bestest greatest feeling i’ve ever had. I can not even imagine what Katz is going through to have one like that this long, and that bad.

As much as we trash on the guy, nobody wants this. Hope he recovers. I was impressed to see him sitting at the press table today. Good on him for finally stepping into the public eye again and even speaking on the Oilers a bit.

Sad to hear and see…very brave of him to make a public appearance especially given the reaction he must have known some ppl will have…all the best Mr. Katz and hopefully a full and complete recovery

  • Apps98

God’s blessings to Mr. Katz & wishing him successful treatment & healing. The only thing I really noticed was that he looked tanned. May we never make light of the personal health issues people have to go through.

During the conference, I made a snide remark about his appearance on another article without knowing the reason… my apologies and good luck in your fight Mr. Katz.

  • cityofchampions

I have always appreciated Katz’s willingness to spend money on this team, although how the money was spent remains a debateable issue. I probably would have been inclined to let this be known through a team announcement much earlier to explain the reason behind his absence, but if he wanted to keep it private then that is his prerogative. From another sinus sufferer (not to your extent though), wish you a quick and complete recovery Mr. Katz.

First off I wish the guy all the best. Hockey is nothing important compared to your life.

All the frustration I had is gone. No wonder the guy’s not making major changes, he’s focused on battling for his health.

I know he doesn’t owe anyone an explanation, but knowing this two years ago sure would’ve changed the reaction everyone had to the season. Personally at least, I’d be a lot more patient and would have tempered my expectations. I’m glad he was open about his struggles, hopefully he comes through

  • Wesley41

Before I found out about this I made a stupid plastic surgery comment so I must apologize for my dumb remark and Obviously you have bigger issues then a hockey team get well soon hopefully!

Katz has taken a lot of flack from not only the fans and media over being absent from the the Oilers or even coming out and saying something in regards to the team, The Oilers culd have easily said that Katz was dealing with some health issues and wouldn’t be available, that would have been understood by the fans and media.

I wish Katz a speedy recovery

  • MrBung

Wow. When you think – even a guy like Katz with the resources and connections he has can get something like this. Scary. Props to him for putting himself out there today.
