Oilers Prospect Update: That’s a Wrap

With the completion of the Memorial Cup, every one of the Oilers prospects will begin their offseason plans.

For Dmitri Samorukov, his Mem Cup ended in the semi-finals after losing to Rouyn-Noranda. A quiet tournament for the young D man after an incredible OHL playoffs run with only one assist. Ostap Safin had an even more quiet tournament with no scoresheet appearances at all. To add to the disappointment for Safin, he was only able to play one shift (at the time of posting) in the final game before leaving as a result of this hit:

For the franchise, on the whole, there are a lot of positives to take from this season. The Condors put together the best season in franchise history and with the shift in team mentality the indication is that the team will remain intact with the addition of younger players.

Samorukov didn’t have quite the overtly outstanding performance in the Memorial Cu that he did in the OHL playoff offensively but my goodness we saw glimpses of how good he can (and will) be defensively.

He had zero points in the semi-final loss and lots of goals were scored and he was named the games second star.

Lets remember, he is a very very good defensive d-man. His aggressiveness defending zone entries off the rush it top end – he’ll need to pick his spots more at the next level but he has great instincts and timing.

His board battles in the defensive zone are also high end – consistently coming away with the puck.

Great season, lots of development, still miles to go.

Good luck as a rookie pro in the Bake next year – ice time will be earned and I believe you will earn the minutes.

I didn’t see the semi-final loss, but had me wondering as I checked the box score and saw precisely what you just noted: lots of goals scored and zero points in the loss… and he was named second star. Figured it had to have something to do with the intangibles 😉

From all accounts, yes, he won’t be signing with the Oilers. I don’t know for sure but rumblings are the org isn’t looking to sign him. Not sure exactly why but likely a bit to do with playing time for Wells and Skinner who, are numerous years younger than Hawkey and, realistically, both higher potential prospects.
