Oilers sign Tomas Jurco to a one-year deal

Ken Holland is diving into the bargain bin, adding a familiar face in Tomas Jurco to a one-year contract. The deal will apparently be a shade over the league minimum at $750k.

Jurco was a second-round pick of Holland’s Red Wings back in 2011. He played parts of four seasons with the Red Wings, scoring 39 points in 159 games with Detroit before getting dealt to the Blackhawks in 2017 for a third-round pick. He spent last season with the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes organizations, helping the AHL Charlotte Checkers win the Calder Trophy with an impressive 18 points in 18 playoff games.

Though he hasn’t been able to put it together at the NHL level, the 26-year-old was once a highly-touted prospect. Given his good run with the Checkers in the AHL last year, Jurco is certainly worth a risk. The contract is just a shade above the league minimum, so if it doesn’t work out, at the very least you have yourself a good winger to play in the AHL who can be called up as an injury replacement. At best, maybe you’ve found a diamond in the rough.

So we had $12M yesterday, now we have $4M left. No top 6 wingers, all the bottom 6 winger so imaginable, and 2 goalies who aren’t starters. Excellent GMing there Holland, I hope you get fired out of a cannon. Please, rid us of your stupidity.

If the cap space were available, I would have waited to see if Sekera had a bounce-back season. If the Oil can make that gamble with Mike Smith, why not do the same for one of their own guys. Other than that, the signings by Holland have been nice and conservative.

All I’ve read these past few days is you complaining about everything. Maybe you need to ask yourself if you’re actually an oilers fan? Would it hurt to have a ‘wait and see’ approach, and maybe wait to see the team play a few games under tippet before ripping every decision Holland makes? If you knew anything you’d know that chia left holland a very flawed team with terrible contracts and not much cap space. Sorry to break the news but this won’t be an overnight rebuild. All we can hope for is that tippet still has a knack for getting teams to play above their talent level until we can start getting out from under the colossal mess chia left here.

It’s funny. Do you not think Holland tried to sign a top 6 winger? Do you not think that maybe they turned down the Oilers’ offer? GM-ing is not as easy as you make it out to be. I don’t know what you were expecting, but a top 6 winger would probably command AT LEAST 5 or 6 million per on a long-term contract. I would argue that improving the bottom 6 is just as important. Teams win when their third and fourth lines can contribute offensively. Aside from the Mike Smith signing, I don’t mind the signings Holland made today. This is not a quick and easy fix.

Yes, let’s take our already fragile cap situation and just break it’s back over our knee for more expensive, long term options who probably don’t want to come here.

Alex, cheer for your favorite players don’t get so hung up on what color jersey they are wearing. You’ll enjoy the games more too.
Heck you’ll probably even look good in red.

  • SlovakOiler

I got trashed at the end of last season when he signed an AHL deal with Charlotte and I said he could be had for cheap. Hope it pans out. Great talent but has problems staying healthy.

Wow Alex you need a break!Life is not so miserable fella,if the Oilers piss you off so much that every comment you make is venom then stop and take up a new hobby there is more to life then constant misery!

It’s ok, every Oiler fan with a grasp of reality knows this can’t be fixed this season or possibly next. Oilers will be drafting very high next draft but hopefully for the last time in a while. Burger Bob and PC really screwed this team over and it’s going to take ole Kenny 2-3 years to pull the Titanic off of the ocean floor to get it floating again.

    • chezzychez

Ken’s not risking anything with small amount of cap space he inherited. Look at the Oilers recent history with free agent signings. I for one don’t want to lock up older players for too much money or term. That wouldn’t help our brutal situation. I don’t think this last season was a bust because Nuge didn’t have a top 6 winger at his side. It was a bust because the bottom 6 couldn’t do anything and gave up too much and the PK was brutal. Kenny is picking away but won’t make a big splash unless someone takes Looch or Russel

    • NoBuBlackOPS

You do realize Alex that it takes two to make a deal if one sides not interested it’s not going to happen shocking I know. It’s not like Holland can wave a magic wand make all of PCs horrible contracts he brought in or signed magically valuable. Best thing Holland did today was not give out term today or overpay a UFA. Last thing we need is another contract that pays a player to much and is a year to long.

  • cityofchampions

Meh, underwhelming day but nothing that will hurt long-term. Feels like last year when we took a bunch of chances on guys, but what else can you do when you are up against the cap? Some will work out like Chiasson last year, and some won’t like Reider. Small bets, but we’d need them all to work out if we want to compete for a wild card spot.

  • Quoteright

What I like so far is that he has already got enough players AND there is money left over. Sekera only got 1.5, obviously nobody wanted him.
Also, we needed room to evaluate the farm. There is now finally good, worthy prospects that deserves some time with the big club.
So far I like his risk management. No big risks, just some decent priced gambles.

    • Beer_League_Ringer

I like your take. Big $$$ free agency is for teams that need 1-2 pieces for an all-in season. That might be the Oilers in 3 seasons if Ken Holland stays this course.

  • Beer_League_Ringer

Alex… Your act is old. It is to the point where people feel sorry for you. Did you stop taking your meds and crave more folks at your pity party?

    Asking for a friend.

But can he skate??? He obviously has skill and a knack for the net. But if he can’t keep up in the NHL well then it’s just an AHL signing. At best we found a cheap winger. At worst we have a good AHL winger to keep our development system humming and at zero salary cap cost to us as he’s under the threshold.
