Oilers add new scouts

Ken Holland has dipped into a familiar well to add to his staff, hiring two former Detroit Red Wings staffers to join the Oilers scouting department.

Tyler Wright served as the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Red Wings under Holland from 2013 to 2019. Prior to that, was with the Columbus Blue Jackets organization. Wright was also drafted by the Oilers 12th overall in 1991, though he only played 41 games with the club.

The Red Wings saw some success at the draft with Wright at the helm, finding good players with mid-to-late first-round picks like Dylan Larkin (15th overall in 2014), Anthony Mantha (20th overall in 2013), and Dennis Cholowski (20th overall in 2016). Beyond the first round, the Red Wings had a couple steals in Andreas Athanasiou (110th overall in 2012) and Filip Hronek (53rd overall in 2016) in the Wright era.

Also joining Holland’s staff will be veteran pro scout Archie Henderson. A career AHL journeyman, Henderson served as a pro scout for the Washington Capitals from 1995 to 2003 and then joined Holland in Detroit in 2015.

Step 1: find good players. Step 2: develop good players. On the pro side, we definitely need fresh eyes. Trading for Manning was not good scouting and asset management. Welcome to the Oil guys!

Could explain why it’s been quiet on the trade front. Holland wants his pro scouts in place for their evaluations of pro players as he didn’t trust the guys that were here.

Never thought of that but that might make sense. Chiarelli went from taking chances in trades to outright buying lottery tickets this past season. Some trades were headscratchers and others were borderline mad near the end.

We knew with the firings that Holland was going to add new scouts. DET had more than double the pro scouts that Edmonton had last season, so I expect Holland to hire a few more pro scouts in the coming months.

Adding scouts was obvious, I want to start hearing about hirings in the analytics department. The Oilers need these guys in place ASAP so they can actually build a department and a database. Many of the sought after guys have already been hired and I hope that Holland will hire a Director of Analytics soon so they can build a team to run that department.
