WWYDW: Alternate Jerseys

Over the past few weeks, I’ve asked Oilersnation about depth forwards, defencemen, and how best to optimize the team’s superstars. Currently, the website is overflowing with discussions about how best to handle Kailer Yamamoto this year and the hot issue of athletes and politics. So for this week’s What Would You Do Wednesday, I want…

GDB -4.0 Wrap-up: Five in a row

The Oilers just keep on rolling. After five pre-season games, this team has five wins. Jesse Puljujarvi found the back of the net twice, Connor McDavid was Connor McDavid, Brad Malone made a name for himself, Cam Talbot was rock solid, the blueline made life very difficult for the Jets, and the Oilers earned themselves…

Oilers send Ethan Bear and seven others to AHL in latest round of cuts

As we inch closer to the start of the regular season, the Oilers have pulled out the scissors and have made their second round of cuts. Ethan Bear, Ben Betker, Greg Chase, Braden Christoffer, Joe Gambardella, Ziyat Paigin, Kyle Platzer, and Shane Starrett have been sent to the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL. Last week, the…

WWYDW: The Dynamic Duo

The last couple of weeks, I’ve asked Oilersnation what the team should do in regards to its fringe forwards and defencemen. These questions about which depth players will crack the roster will largely be sorted based on pre-season games, which was the general consensus in the comments section. This week, I ask another lineup question,…

GDB -8.0/-7.0 Wrap-up: A Battle of Alberta Sweep

Beating the Flames. That’s just what the Oilers do these days. Last year, the Oilers swept all four games against Calgary in the regular season and both games in the pre-season. It was more of the same on Monday night, as Edmonton got 2017 kicked off with a 5-2 win at home and a 5-4…

WWYDW: The open roster spot left by Anton Slepyshev’s injury

Last week, I asked about the Edmonton Oilers’ blueline heading into the 2017-18 season. Specifically, I asked if the Oilers should sign Cody Franson to fill in while Andrej Sekera recovers from injury. He ended up signing a PTO with the Chicago Blackhawks, so the Oilers will end up rolling with what they have.

NHL expansion or relocation to Seattle becoming more realistic

It was a decade ago that the SuperSonics limped into their final season in Seattle. After a miserable 2007-08 campaign, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz sold the team and its new prize, Kevin Durant, to a group of businessmen from Oklahoma City, and the Sonics became the Thunder.  Now, after years of speculation and failed proposals, Seattle…

Henrik Samuelsson signs with Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL

According to the ECHL’s official website, Henrik Samuelsson, a former first round pick and Memorial Cup Champion with the Edmonton Oil Kings, has signed a contract with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL. Samuelsson was acquired by the Oilers back in February in a swap with the Arizona Coyotes for Mitch Moroz, who was Samuelsson’s…

WWYDW: Cody Franson

According to Sportsnet’s Rick Dhaliwal, the Oilers are one of the final two teams in on defenceman Cody Franson. Apparently, it’s between Edmonton and the Chicago Blackhawks for the big, puck moving, right-handed defenceman. So in this week’s What Would You Do Wednesday Question is about the man of the hour — Cody Franson. Would…
